About the Item
This textile is an excellent and unusual example of the work of Stacy Wiatrak, being both an artwork and a wearable garment. The artist uses appliqued ribbons, images of lilacs and butterfly wings, and a silkscreen of a Victorian image of a young girl to ornament a manufactured child's denim vest from the Gap. The vest bridges the contemporary and the nostalgic, suggesting intergenerational memory and the celebration of passing clothes on from one generation to the next.
Stacy Wiatrak is a textile artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and now residing Nashville. She is fascinated by color, texture and the strong emotions that these two visual elements can instantaneously evoke. The inspiration for her themes revolves around the extraordinary power of nature and ordinary life events. As it is with life experiences, her work can be viewed as a whole, or, when examined more closely, seen as the myriad of elements that combine to create it. Whether viewing a piece for the first or hundredth time, there is always some detail in Wiatrak’s works that previously go unnoticed.
