Grapes and French Cheese
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2001. French wooden frame in ivory with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 23.6 inches wide. Framed size: 26.4 inches high x 30.5 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Sold framed. The first Eyckmans’ painting to employ a brighter, golden palette, this everyday kitchen scene explores the differing textures of the objects within. The artist’s love of all things French is exemplified here with antique pottery, a starched linen tablecloth, breadboard and, of course, fruit and favorite cheeses. Note the superb shadowing of the board extending over the table, the detailing in the chèvre and paper wrapping to the left, and the asymmetrical cluster of stemmed Muscat grapes, all illuminated by easterly light. Classical in perspective and execution, but with a more contemporary feel that derives from the use of color and light, this painting marks a transformational point in the artist’s work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...

Pair of English Impressionist Horse and Buggy scenes with drivers
Located in Woodbury, CT
When Johnny left school, there were many interests which ran alongside his career at the time in the City of London as an Aviation Insurance Broker at Lloyds – writing music, playing with a band, tinkering with Vintage cars, marketing various inventions and making painting trips when possible – it wasn’t long before the Arts beckoned and at twenty six he won a place at the Fine Arts Academy in Florence where he moved in 1972. A year later, moving near Lake Trasimeno, he continued his studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Perugia. Again on the move, he travelled to Pietrasanta near Carrara with some sculptors and stayed on this coast for nearly a year before moving eventually to Grimaldi, just inside Italy – a small medieval village about three hundred yards from the Italian /French frontier close to Monte Carlo. Here he began a series of backstage paintings – at the Opera and Orchestra rehearsals, fashion shows, at the Circus, Jazz and Cabaret – exhibiting regularly along the coast in Monaco, Nice, Cannes and Antibes. In 1984, circumstances changed and it was necessary to return to England – where a chance invitation to the races triggered a whole new series ‘At the Races’ which in time produced a wider series entitled ‘The British Sporting Year’ of Polo, The Henley Regatta, Derby Day, Wimbledon, Bowls, Cricket, Golf – even Jousting at Hever Castle...

Abstract expressionist sea, shore, landscape scene with white, blue and orange
By Claude Howard Stuart
Located in Woodbury, CT
English Abstract expressionist Seascape, shore, and landscape, in Blue, Red, white, and Orange tones, A wonderful abstract expressionist scene depicting the sun setting over the sea. Stuart is an English painter who spends his time between American and the UK. He paints in different mediums depending on the subject he's paintings. This is an exceptional example of his latest abstract work. Before any paint is applied Stuart lays a thin coat of a clay-like substance, this he then scratches and drawers into. After that layer dries he paints many coats of paint that are applied and then removed giving the piece a unique effect and style. He has been influenced by the works of Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, James Brooks, Albert Kotin...

Thy Name is Woman
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 2018. French handmade Delf wooden frame, dark bronze patina with gold leaf. Unframed size: 19.7 inches high x 24.02 inches wide. Framed size: 28 inches high x 32.3 inches wide x 1.25 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan was gifted this skull by a friend, whose carpenter father found many years ago in a false ceiling. The skull sat in his workshop and was eventually named “Gilda”. The composition is unusual in its stark simplicity that speaks to the inevitable death we all face. Fascinating without being morbid, the arrangement is simple yet bold. Note the extraordinary brushwork detailed in the shroud, as well as the intricacies of the skull. The slash of cobalt blue in the background provides an ethereal quality. The title is adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and is the artist’s inside joke on the character “Guildenstern” vs “Gilda”. Part of the title can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Compared to “Vanitas”, painted in 2000, the artist’s evolution in form and execution is most evident in this 2018 work. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...

Of Mice and Cats
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2012. French handmade wooden Delf frame, raised layered frame with tortoise-shell patina. Unframed size: 23.38 inches high x 19.63 inches wide. Framed size: 32.5 inches high x 28.625 inches wide x 2.75 inches deep. Sold framed. This whimsical example of “vanitas” plays with the unexpected elements that represent the feline life cycle. The cat skull was found by Stefaan’s dog, who loves to retrieve animal bones from the corners of their French property and present them to the artist for consideration. Fond of natural materials, particularly skulls, Stefaan sees striking, sculptural, and even mathematical characteristics in such subjects. The kitten postcard depicts a painting by Henriette Ronner-Knip, a famous cat painter. Mickey Mouse is there as an antagonist to the cat, although the amber bottle is tagged “mouse poison” in Latin, for a bit of playful schadenfreude. This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden...

Cityscape with Oil Tins
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on panel, signed and dated 2015. French handmade wooden Delf frame, raised panel with dark gold/bronze patina and gold leaf. Unframed size: 31.5 inches high x 29.5 inches wide. Framed size: 39 inches high x 37 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Sold framed. Stefaan’s love of graphic design fuels his large collection of vintage tins and toys, obtained from local flea markets. He finds their hand-drawn shapes, logos, and lettering to be particularly powerful compared to today’s computer-generated fonts. The artist never cleans his toys, as the dirt and grease gives them more authenticity and retains the feeling of being used. In this painting, Stefaan uses a low perspective to invoke an animated urban scene where the toy car drives through the building-like tins. Executed in a strong classical chiaroscuro, particularly evident in the folds of the heirloom linen...

Nest
Located in Woodbury, CT
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 2019. French matte black wooden frame over red bolus. Unframed size: 28.7 inches high x 36.2 inches wide. Framed size: 38.2 inches high x 45.6 inches wide x 1.75 inches deep. Sold framed. Stefaan enjoys all naturalia, but particularly bird’s nests, as he often finds abandoned ones on his rural property. Each one is special, but all nests adhere to a mathematical sequence, the Golden Ratio, to build a spiraling structure from the inside out. This bird’s nest with quail eggs and jay feather was painted exclusively as the signature work for the artist’s inaugural U.S. Solo Exhibition. The detailing of the nest laced with moss demonstrates the intricate balance between the bold, confident brushstrokes to define the subjects, and the restraint required to keep the composition light, loose, and airy. This large, lifelike work is the centerpiece of a film commissioned by The Elemental Garden...

19th century oil painting of a horse and buggy with a two figures, in landscape
Located in Woodbury, CT
Well painted late 19th-century Austro-Hungarian oil on canvas of two figures in a buggy, out for a ride. Both people are well dressed which makes me think they are of the upper classes and the artist was known to paint scenes of people of wealth in various compositions. Whilst little is known about the painter the style and composition of this piece are typical of some Central European painters who painted such subjects, always with great skill and detail. This is a particularly large example of one of these subjects. The artist has achieved the effect of motion very well. The painting is framed in a Vintage French frame.
