MCM Cut Steel Rotating Abstract Sculpture by James Hubbell
By James Hubbell
Located in San Diego, CA
A very cool MCM cut steel rotating abstract sculpture by James Hubbell, circa 1970s. The sculptural piece is made of dark cut steel that is welded into a diamond shape on a heavy steel base. The piece is in good condition with a vintage patina and measures 13.5"W x 6.25"D x 15.75"H. It can rotate a full 360 degrees. The piece is not signed; there was authentication paperwork that cannot be found. It was purchased in San Diego, CA (the artists hometown) in the early 1970s. #2967
James "Jim" Hubbell (born 1931 in Mineola, New York is a visual artist, architect, sculptor, stained-glass designer and founder of the Ilan-Lael Foundation. He is best known for designing and building organic-style structures that have been referred to as Hobbit houses, including his sculptural home/compound in Julian, CA (outside of San Diego). A reverence for nature remains the basis of James Hubbell’s singular career, one that seamlessly integrates art, craft and architecture. Hubbell studied sculpture at Cranbrook Academy of Art and often worked with labor-intensive, ancient techniques like wrought iron and stained glass in a contemporary architectural context.
During the 1960s and 70s Hubbell’s work was included in the prestigious series of California Design exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Arts of Southern California series at the Long Beach Museum of Art, as well as at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York. His forged iron work was featured in Craft Horizons magazine...

welded steel
Measures: 18 x 22 x 14-1/2 in.
Artist statement:
I seldom use stock material, but prefer distressed and rusted steel that has been scarred, bent, and made imperfect. In this state, the material becomes quite beautiful. There are figurative elements in my work, though I am more drawn to the non-figurative, to the raw and essential aspect of steel. The Industrial purpose of steel must be considered, its use in construction, manufacturing, the military. Steel is forged with enormous energy and power. The process is violent, loud. Here, it is still and approachable.
The compositions are constructed mainly from found parts. Their relationships manifest as I interact with the material. The pieces interlock, balance, and become fitted before I fasten or weld them together. The engineering is elemental. Altering the material is avoided. The number of parts kept to a minimum.
Art is my spiritual exercise, my selflessness. It identifies me as a creator and satisfies my human longing for place and purpose. It needs not to be great, or preeminent, or commercial. Art speaks because it is Primitive. It exists because it is sacred.

Bijan Bahar Lucite Sculpture
By Bijan Bahar
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A massive 450 pound Lucite sculpture by the noted artist Bijan Bahar. This piece is enormous and quite impressive. It looks great with the led light changing colors which will accompany the piece.
It features an etched signature. This piece was hand-craved out by the artist and when viewed at the proper angle the hollowed out circle looks like multiple circles. Quite a stunning effect. it sits on a ring of Lucite and has an acrylic base plate. The sculpture is 22.75 inches tall but with the ring, which allows it to be rotated quite easily and base is 25.5 inches tall. This sculpture has a bit of cloudiness to it and some minor scuffs and marks. A truly monumental work by a talented artist.
