Pair of vintage French prints by Charles Cobelle. Circa 1950's matted and framed. Charles Cobelle, born Carl Edelman (1902–1994) was a modern French master of painting, lithography and a fine muralist, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He is considered the last link to the great tradition of the Open Line School of Paris. Cobelle received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Munich and continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[1] Much more influential in his development, however, were his private studies with Marc Chagall and his apprenticeship in the studio of Raoul Dufy in Menton on the Riviera. Cobelle lived and painted in Paris until the late 1920s and established himself within the great tradition of the School of Paris.[2] In the late 1920s, Cobelle moved to the United States, where his paintings were immediately sought after by galleries and private collectors alike.[1] Cobelle became a U.S. citizen before the outbreak of World War II.[1] In the late 1940s to 1950s, Cobelle lived in Westport, Connecticut.Charles Cobelle lived in Ridgefield CT in a private lake community called Twixt Hills until his death. [3] By the 1950s, spurred by the commercial success of his mentor, Dufy, Cobelle had achieved phenomenal success commercially with his Parisian-influenced style.[4] Much like contemporary artists and designers at the time, his designs graced a number of pottery patterns for various pottery companies, including Midwinter Stylecraft...

Rare and very elegant pair of silver bronze bookends entitled: "Pierrots". (Max Le Verrier commercial catalogue, 1925, N° 466 Page 18, for the same model). These perfectly symmetrical figures are enhanced by a "Portor" marble base. Hans Zatzka (Austrian, 1859-1945) a very fine and charming oil on canvas "Spring Beauties", depicting three young maidens picking flowers by a lake. The three young girls sitting, kneeling and laying on a grassy area of the forest, her wicker basket filled with the freshly picked flowers, the middle one wearing a bonnet and a straw-hat laying on the ground behind with butterflies flying by, within a gilt-wood and gesso carved frame. Signed (l/r): H. Zatzka. Circa: 1890's. Hans Zatzka (Austrian, 1859-1945) was a well known and regarded Austrian fantasy artist whose most popular and valuable works depicted figures of young maidens with angels, floral and other cheerful and warm scenes, including Orientalist themes. In the past thirty years alone, the high quality and detail of his beautiful paintings has caught the attention of International collectors and art dealers alike, creating a highly sought after market and demand for his instantly recognizable body of work. In the late 19th and early 20th century, many of Zazka's charming works were photographed for commercial and collectable postcards. Though no information about his works being exhibited in museums is currently available, most of Zatzka's paintings are in private collections and, in the past century, very few of them have become available on the open market. At the young age of eighteen Zatzka joined Austria's Academy of Fine Arts under the leadership of Professor Blaas. For his fine early works, in 1880 he received The Golden Fügermedal award. Zatzka, like many other artists of the era, traveled around Europe working and selling his art and, in one of his many trips to Italy, he developed a special interest in Religious themes, decorating churches with frescos as well as painting several religious scenes of Madonna's and Child, Saints, Angels and others. In 1885 Zatzka was commissioned to paint "The Naiad of Baden" a ceiling fresco at Kurhaus Baden. Most of Zatzka's income came from his work in religious art and special church commissions. Numerous leading art dealers from around the world that specialize in late 19th and early 20th century European genre paintings have come to the conclusion that the painter signing his works Bernard Zatzka, Joseph Bernard or J. Bernard is almost certainly the artist Hans Zatzka. The consensus seems quite plausible when comparing works known to have been executed by Hans Zatzka together with similar works displaying the signature; Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard or Bernard Zatzka. Lohengrin refers to the knight of the swan, hero of German versions of a legend widely known in variant forms from the European Middle Ages onward. It seems to bear some relation to the northern European folktale of “The Seven Swans,” but its actual origin is uncertain. It is also a character in German Arthurian literature. Mixed media on paper and wood behind aryl glass Mimmo Paladino, Italy 2009 (2/20) Mimmo Paladino found art inspired by his uncle, a painter who introduced him to traditional techniques at an early age. After attending the 1964 Venice Biennale, he made the decision to become an artist. He studied painting at the Liceo Artistico in Benevento from 1964 to 1968 and, influenced by Max Ernst and Paul Klee, experimented with collages, frottages and non-objective paintings. In 1968 he finished his academic training with a diploma and began to paint freely. In the early to Mid-1970s, the artist dealt almost exclusively with mythological themes, such as the Icarus myth, which he translated into drawings. In the process, Paladino developed his own fresco-like technique, significant for his later work, in which he painted large-scale walls with pastel colors. Paladino had his first exhibition in 1977 at the "Galerie Lucio Amelio" in Naples. Several trips to Milan as well as contact with the art critic Tommaso Trini and the gallery owner Franco Toselli soon made Paladino known nationwide. In Toselli's gallery he presented his murals for the first time in 1978. That same year he traveled to New York, where he met Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente. Several trips to Brazil followed. In 1980 Mimmo Paladino, together with the publisher Emilio Mazzoli, published a book with texts by Achille Bonito Oliva. The art critic Oliva had introduced the term Transavanguardia at the end of the 1970s for the style of the new movement, mainly characterized by young Italian artists such as Chia, Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Paladino, who found parallels in Germany with the Neue Wilde. In the same year Paladino participated in the Aperto 80 Biennale in Venice and in 1982 in the Biennale of Sydney. In the following years Paladino had exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum in Basel and at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Bologna. In 1999 he had an extensive retrospective at the Lenbachhaus in Munich and in the same year he became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Centro per l'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato dedicated an extensive retrospective to him in 2002/2003.[1] Works by Mimmo Paladino can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist lives and works in Milan and Benevento, Italy. PLANT Mimmo Paladino's works are often mixed media on paper or wood pre-sketched with drawing pencil, using all traditional means. His oeuvre includes watercolor, oil painting, and tempera, as well as collage, frottage, engraving, drypoint, or woodcut. Paladino's paintings are often untitled. He was a doctor of fine arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. He is an ordinary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia. In 1968 he was a scholarship holder at the Calculus Center of the University of Madrid. It was then that he started his first computer work. The first Computable Forms exhibition was held in 1969. He has received numerous awards: B.G. Salvi and Premio Europa Ancona, Italy in 1972 and the Juan March Foundation scholarship in 1974 to stay at MIT in the USA, Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1990 he was invited to participate in the Toyama Now International Triennial in Japan. At the invitation of the Union of Russian Artists, he went to Moscow, where he conducted courses and lectures about his works. He received an award in the Valencia Underground wall painting and sculpture competition in 1995. In 1996, he spent a month at the U.N.A.M. Mexico F.D and conducted various activities related to Flying Structures. In 1998 he returned to Mexico to exhibit his work in several museums. Also in that year he was invited to participate in the First European Triennial of Nature in Dragsholm Slot Odsherred, Denmark. He showed the works of Frame the Forest, Hyperweb and Flying Structure. The exhibition of his latest work took place in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Sao Paulo and Paris. He published numerous articles and lectures. He is also the author of books. He was deputy curator at the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca. He developed an artistic style close to science, such as his Impossible Figures. He introduced cyber art...
