Zoe Mozert created several pastel paintings for use in the 1946 movie, "Never Say Goodbye", starring Errol Flynn, Eleanor Parker and Peggy Knudsen about a calendar artist trying to paint the perfect pin up. A Zoe Mozert pastel strikingly similar to this one prominently appears at the beginning of the movie. The model in this pastel is the actress from the movie, Peggy Knudsen.
Zoe Mozert, born in Colorado Springs in 1907, was the most successful and well known female calendar artist of her time. She was born Alice Adelaide Moser, but when she was old enough, she changed her name to Zoe Mozert because she felt that she could never become famous with such a name. In 1941, Brown and Bigelow Calendar Company signed her to an exclusive calendar contract. During the war, her pin-up series for Brown and Bigelow called Victory Girls was published both in calendar and mutoscope card form. By 1950, she was considered among the "big four" at Brown and Bigelow, taking a place alongside Gil Elvgren, Rolf Armsgtrong, and Earl Moran. Often her own model, Mozert is noted for depicting realistic looking young women with individual features and personalities, while rejecting the sexy girl...

Pierre Andrieu (1821-1892) was a pupil of the famous painter Eugène Delacroix from 1844 and his colleague until 1863. He worked with him at the town hall of Paris, at the Senate, at the Chamber of Deputies, at the Angels Chapel at the Saint-Sulpice Church, and they restored the ceiling of the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre. In 1868, he restored the paintings at the Senate library realized by Delacroix ruined by infiltrations.
In 1871, he opened his art studio and realized copies of Delacroix’s artworks, original paintings with genre scenes and animals (one is currently at the National Gallery in London) and a great number of orientalist drawings...

This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation.
About the Artist:
Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career.

HANNA BAKUŁA (born in 1950) Polish painter, stage designer and writer. Bakuła graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she studied under such polish masters as J. Tarasin, E. Eibisch, A. Kobzdej. In 1981 she moved to New York and settled down on Manhattan. She painted, designed scenography and costumes for the avant-garde theatre "The Kitchen". These designs were praised by "The New York Times" as the best of the Off Broadway projects and won the first prize. She received a scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation.
