Louis Macouillard was born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 8, 1913 of French descent and first graduated from Polytechnic High School and the CCAC (1934) before further study at the Art Students League in NYC. Returning to San Francisco, he became art director for the Velvetone Poster Company and maintained a studio on Hotaling Place. He began painting scenes of San Francisco in watercolor during the 1930's and also worked in mosaics and as a muralist. He exhibited with success including at the Oakland Art Gallery (later the Oakland Museum) 1934, and at the San Francisco Art Association (1935). During WWII, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific and produced many artworks of that area which were featured in a six-page spread and cover of the October 1943 issue of Life magazine. As well as fine art, his work included book illustrations and the designs for two U.S. postage stamps (Daniel Boone...

Jane Gray A.R.C.A. (b.1931) is a British stained glass artist. She studied stained glass at the Kingston School of Arts (1949-51) and later at the Royal College of Art (1951-55) under Lawrence Lee. Lee was so impressed with Gray’s work that he asked her to work alongside him on the design of ten nave windows for Coventry Cathedral. This six-year-long design project culminated in their final installation in 1962 after the cathedral’s consecration. Gray was the first woman to become a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and has designed more than a hundred windows in private and public buildings, chapels and over forty churches across the country, including St Peter’s, Martindale, Shrewsbury Abbey, St Oswald, Oswestry and St Mary, Chirk. Gray’s designs mark a crucial turning point in the history of stained glass art as the Victorian style gave way to a modern aesthetic. In her work, Gray navigates this shift with a style that, whilst distinctly modern, retains a deep rooted sense of the medieval. Despite many of her commissions being for church windows, stained glass design was not simply about religious depiction for Gray, but more about ‘colour, shapes, luminosity, [and] playing with rainbows’.

EDOUARD (EDY) LEGRAND
French, 1892–1970
Edy-Legrand, whose real name is Edward Louis Warschawsky Leon, born in Bordeaux in 1892, died in Bonnieux in 1970. He was a French illustrator and painter. He made the first part of his career in advertising illustration and literature. Later, his work was devoted to painting. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris, the Art Academy in Munich, and then lived and worked for Tolmer Publishing House in Paris for much of his career. After the Second World War, he spent much time in New York where he worked as an illustrator for various publishers.
Legrand was born in Bordeaux, France to a French mother and a Russian-Jewish father. In 1919, as a young painter , Edy-Legrand created the first children's book, Macao and Cosmage or experience happiness, for the New French Review. The compositions are colored by hand by Jean Saudé. This album was greeted with exceptional praise since the 1980s and applauded as a milestone in the history of illustrated book for children.
In 1932, Edy-Legrand participated in the first World Exhibition of engraved works of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he represented France. In this exhibit was also work by Picasso, Matisse and Derain, but Edy-Legrand was the only one to receive an honorable mention.
Subsequently, he moved to Rabat , in Morocco. Of this period, Jacques Majorelle wrote:
"In Morocco, Edy-Legrand is fascinated by the elements of life that he discovered in the unceasing movement of crowds and the vibration of color by the play of light on the costumes and decor. The show is so totally pictorial he complains, at first, to be obliged to fight against the temptation to faithfully reproduce external reality [...]. The more he painted, the more clearly he affirms its independence vis-à-vis the spectacle of nature. He loves above all...
