Claude Muncaster (1903-1974) Cardiff Castle Wales Dated May 1962 Signed lower right Watercolour 14x26cm Muncaster's watercolours capture the British countryside feel with great competence and passion. Here the ancient scheduled monument of Cardiff castle is made to feel both grand and imposing, yet reflecting the softness of the countryside. A few elegant motorcars are parked before it. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham. Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. Christopher Ganz La Salute, Venice 2015 intaglio on chine colle, ed. II/VI 11h x 7w in 27.94h x 17.78w cm Frame: 21.25h x 18.25w in CG0035 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. "Basilica" is a graphite and watercolor painting of an architectural detail of the San Marco Basilica in Venice, Italy. This piece is 20.5 by 16.25 inches framed. McLean Jenkins is inspired by the work of JMW Turner, Richard Diebenkorn and Louis Khan. McLean Jenkins is a practicing architect with McAlpine and his work derives from and celebrates the classical forms of his trade. Working in graphite, ink and watercolor, McLean employs a gestural approach that frees his hand to explore a subject’s essence. His compositions rely on the quick, decisive sketch and are then given over to the whims and splashes of watercolor. Spontaneity, movement and spirit are all emphasized and his drawings collectively form their own narrative of his passion for architecture. The city of Venice has captured McLean’s imagination since his first trip there as a 12 year old boy. Over the years a kind of courtship with the city has evolved, and its impact has motivated and sustained his development as both architect and artist. "Duomo" is a watercolor painting featuring subtle hues of blue and orange. McLean Jenkins is inspired by the work of JMW Turner, Richard Diebenkorn and Louis Khan. McLean Jenkins is a practicing architect with McAlpine and his work derives from and celebrates the classical forms of his trade. Working in graphite, ink and watercolor, McLean employs a gestural approach that frees his hand to explore a subject’s essence. His compositions rely on the quick, decisive sketch and are then given over to the whims and splashes of watercolor.
