Abstract mixed media painting by Moshe Tamir titled 'Der Reiter (The Rider)'
Located in London, GB
'The Rider (Der Reiter)' by Moshe Tamir (1924 - 2004) Mixed media and collage on paper 92 x 63 cm (36 ¹/ x 24 ³/₄ inches) Signed upper left, M Tamir Provenance Private collection, Switzerland Artist biography Moshe Tamir was born in Odessa and completed his studies at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Art in 1947 after which he won the Struck Award presented by the painter Mordechai Ardon. In 1952, Tamir graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he specialised in fresco and monumental painting, and was chosen by his teacher, the renowned fresco artist Prozzo Parchi, to become his assistant in painting murals at the Church of St. Eugene in Rome. Working closely with a prominent figure in the art of fresco painting greatly contributed to Tamir’s professional development. Without surrendering to passing fashions, Tamir’s work encompasses oil, fresco, drawing and gouache. One of Tamir’s masterpieces – a magnificent fresco Amnon Wounded, part of a permanent exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum – earned him honourable citation at the Venice Biennale. In 1954 Tamir moved to the Montparnasse in Paris, where he lived and worked for seven years alongside Constantin Brâncuşi, Jean Tinguely and Jean Dubuffet, whilst deepening his practice at the École des Beaux-Arts. Here he developed “New Figuration” – paintings crammed with shapes and mythological images in thick, colourful and intoxicating layers of paint. In 1958 he exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and was voted one of the top twenty young artists in Europe, which earned him a Young Artist Award in Israel. Following this exhibition Tamir was invited to paint monumental frescoes in Chicago and Mexico City. Between 1956 and 1986, he was invited to present four exhibitions at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels that included a joint exhibition with Pablo Picasso. With newspapers headlines declaring him a “Renaissance Man”, the opening of the 1986 exhibition hosted many important guests, among which were King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola, the Belgian Prime Minister, ministers of the Belgian Parliament and heads of the European community. Tamir won First Prize for lithography at the Sao Paulo Biennale, his work remaining on permanent display at the Rio de Janeiro Museum. Publishing several albums of lithographs, for the last it was the celebrated poet Mario Lucci dedicated three poems written especially for the occasion. The art critic Stephane Rey has written, “Tamir is an artist, but also a thinker, thorough and educated. His works have made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century, and he gathers around him more and more art lovers all the time. He is contemporary, cosmopolitan and unique”. His work features prominently in prestigious international collections, such as those of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium...

Large Colorful 1980s New York Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Joan Thorne
Located in Surfside, FL
This is a large colorful, bold, vibrant original oil painting on canvas, hand signed and dated 1989. It is titled Crete. Joan Thorne (1943-) is a New York artist nationally and internationally recognized. A third generation Abstract Expressionist woman artist who has exhibited works over the past 30 years. Her art has been shown in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum’s Annual Exhibition, the Grand Palais in Paris, and Barbara Rose’s seminal exhibition American Painting: The Eighties at New York University’s Grey Gallery. Her recent shows in New York City have been reviewed by the New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews and The New Criterion among others. Her work has been compared to Elizabeth Murray work. It is colorful and has a 1980's, Memphis Milano feel to it. Thorne grew up in Greenwich Village. Her mother was a Ukrainian immigrant from a musical family, who became an English teacher; her father, a surgeon. Recognizing their daughter’s artistic talents early, they enrolled her at age six in the Little Red Schoolhouse on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin, a pioneer in educational reform, the school has continued to maintain its reputation as a progressive and nurturing catalyst for creative children. Pete Seeger, the folk singer, performed there so frequently that Thorne remembered him as if he were one of the teachers. In 1971, Thorne met Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) and joined her as a teacher at the Women’s House of Detention on Rikers Island in a new program called “Art without Walls–Free Space.” The program, which had been born from the civil rights movement, was aimed at enriching the lives of the inmates. Thorne and her peers came of age struggling against sexism in the art establishment and its attendant lack of exhibition opportunities for women. Since 1985, this issue had been loudly exposed by the public protests of the Guerrilla Girls, whose members remain a well-kept secret. Her painting has been included in two Whitney Museum Biennials and various other museum group exhibitions both in the United States, Europe and Latin America. She has had numerous one person shows in galleries such as: Sideshow Gallery New York, Fischbach Gallery, New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Willard Gallery, New York, Graham & Sons Gallery, New York, The Clocktower, New York City, and the National Arts Club among others. Thorne has been awarded the Prix de Rome Fellowship to paint at the American Academy in Rome. She also received two National Endowment grants for painting and two Pollock Krasner Grants among others. "Since 1973, while myriad styles, movements and mediums have flourished briefly in turn, Joan Thorne has steadfastly developed one visual language-that of painterly surface, light, color and distilled form-which she finds best suited for her artistic project: intimating dreams. intuitions and the psychic consequences of travel. " "For there is something luxuriant and mysterious in Thorne's compositions. They have a classic modernist genealogy that encompasses Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Milton Avery and Mark Tobey; yet each carries a hint of exoticism, " --Richard Vine, Art In America, Review, June 1998 Education Hunter College, New York, M.A. New York University, New York, B.S. Turkish LA Artist Modernist Abstract Portrait in Gold Leaf on Paper Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Ali Acerol, who was born in Bursa, Turkey in 1948 and died in Los Angeles in 2007, became a kind of legend in the Southern California art world for his stunning maps of countries and continents, his invented and satiric postage stamps, and his brick furniture— as well as for being stubborn, impossible, and brilliant. He grew up in Istanbul, then was educated at the Sorbonne, in Paris. Acerol said that his earliest memories were of taking walks with his father in Istanbul and noticing old brick walls. He continued his fine arts education in 1975 at CalArts in Southern California. This piece contains elements of Arabic and Islamic calligraphic abstraction. This first posthumous exhibition of works is drawn primarily from the collection of Richard Hertz, author of two influential works on the local art scene: Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia and The Beat and the Buzz: Inside the LA Art World. The show includes Acerol’s magnificent eight by twelve-foot World Map that has not been seen in public for over thirty years. The World Map, covered with sign language that names the countries and cities, was originally Acerol’s MFA thesis project. Like all his works, it does not speak in simple terms. As critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe wrote, Ali’s art is about parallel meanings and mutual incomprehension — “lots of little hands where there should be words, a symbolic code unfamiliar to most…” Turkish Artist Ali arrived in California in 1975 after seven years in Paris and enrolled at Cal Arts, then in its fifth year of existence. Soon he became close friends with such well-known artists as John Baldessari and Michael Asher, the godfathers of the art program, along with many colleagues such as Diane Buckler, Dana Duff, Mike Kelley, Laura Lasworth, Stephen Prina, and Christopher Williams...
