Thoren was the son of Colonel Franz Kasimir Ritter von Thoren and his wife Konstanze Maria (née Lachmann). He became an officer in 1846 and was involved in the Hungarian campaign in 1848. After turning to painting in 1857, he studied in Brussels and Paris for several years.
