No Dutch draughtsman ever captured the atmosphere of the rural countryside of Holland with the same atmospheric and engaging simplicity that Van Goyen achieved in drawings such as this. Indeed, his landscapes were seminal in the development of the genre. The present sketch conveys a striking sense of movement within the natural landscape, conveyed by the deftly applied strokes of chalk, from which the artist’s hand can be sensed. The composition is characteristic of his work, with the low horizon affording significance to the broad sky and the soaring birds within. This feeling of windswept motion powerfully evokes the expansive Dutch farmland with which he was evidently preoccupied.

A substantial, Modernist oil showing a mare and foal frolicking in a deep chestnut landscape interspersed with foliage and areas of bright color.
Born in Los Angeles, Leon D'Usseau began training under the guidance of his father, who was among the earliest fine-art film directors to work in Hollywood. At the age of twelve, Leon was drawing seriously and, at fifteen, received a working scholarship at Chouinard School of Art where he studied under Merrill Gage and Alexander Archipenko. At this early age, he was also employed by Chouinard to teach a line-drawing class.
Adopting the anglicized brush-name of Dusso, he exhibited widely and with success including at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1937-40), the California Palace Legion of Honor (1941), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1942), the Laguna Festival of Arts, Los Angeles Artists Association (1945), the California Watercolor Society (1946) and the Audubon Association (1945). The Palazzo Chigi (in which the film-maker Luchino Visconti would film a large part of The Leopard a century later) and the adjoining church are seen from the bottom of the ravine that surrounds the town. Artist Biography
Qiu Ting was born 1971 in Luhe, Guangdong province. In 1992, he enrolled in the traditional Chinese painting department of China Academy of Art to study landscape painting,and graduated with a master's degree in 2000. In 2004, he earned his doctorate in fine arts from Tsinghua University. He is presently vice-president in the traditional Chinese painting department of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.

Artist Biography
Qiu Ting was born 1971 in Luhe, Guangdong province. In 1992, he enrolled in the traditional Chinese painting department of China Academy of Art to study landscape painting, and graduated with a master's degree in 2000. In 2004, he earned his doctorate in fine arts from Tsinghua University. He is presently vice-president in the traditional Chinese painting department of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.
