"Moon Face" Pink, Black, Yellow, and Gray Modern Abstract Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Gray, pink, red, and yellow toned abstract contemporary painting by Chicago-based artist, Richard A. Johnson. Painting depicts various shapes and lines that appear to be floating above the canvas.
Dimensions Without Frame: H 49.75 in. x W 55.88 in.
Artist Biography: "There is something about the ocean that is so entwined with our makeup, that I can't help but be drawn to it. There really is nothing more powerful or hypnotic. The movement is ever changing and the attempt to capture that moment of change is what has engaged me in these pieces. There is something so ephemeral about all life that is perfectly captured in a wave. It only exists for a moment, but it's beauty and dynamism is so powerful that for that brief amount of time, nothing else matters. And yet, there is a subtlety, a moment of expansive calm, the monochrome of the colors and yet the exquisite and diverse play of tones. All of this captivates me and compels me to try and capture it all that on canvas."
- Richard Johnson
The luminescent beauty and lyrical quality of Richard S. Johnson's work is what captivates collectors today. "Old Masters" technical virtuosity, pre-Raphael romanticism, and contemporary expressionism and abstraction all combine to create his unique works of touching depth and artistry.
Born in Chicago to an artistic family, his earliest reminiscences are of pouring through Charles Dana Gibson, N.C. Wyeth, and John Singer Sargent books on rainy afternoons. While still in grade school he won a scholarship to the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. He later attended the American Academy of Art and upon graduation began a very successful career as an illustrator.
Turning his attentions to fine art after winning a competition in International Artists Magazine, Rick was invited to Japan where his one man show was so successful that he has been invited back numerous times and has developed an international base of collectors. He has also won many awards in competitions here in the United States including the Award of Excellence, in the Oil Painters of America Midwest regional Juried Competition and People's Choice Award at the International Museum of Contemporary Master's of Fine Art in San Antonio, TX.
Perhaps the term that best describes Rick's work is "Poetic Intimacy". His sure brush strokes, bold use of color and impasto, and delicate rendering of the human face and form all work together in a harmony that refuses to draw attention to themselves for their technical virtuosity, but rather to draw their viewer into the awareness that they are sharing one, serene, contemplative moment; that the light that pours over the subject's skin also caresses theirs.
Rick's expressive skill for capturing the human form has brought him numerous commissions:
- John F. Kennedy at the JFK Memorial Library in Boston.
- A commemorative painting of the presidents from Eisenhower to Bush currently hanging at the President's Council on Physical Fitness in Washington D.C.
- Rear Admiral Richard S. Truly, USN, the first commander of the NASA Space Shuttle...

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries.
Extraordinary draftsman, agile handling pencil and charcoal, Ignacio Gil immortalized landscapes of all Spain...

Ben Avraham Nahmani Israeli School Jerusalem Landscape Painting Doves of Peace
Located in Surfside, FL
Ben Avraham Nhamani
Hand signed by artist to corner.
Depicts doves over an archway leading to Old City Jerusalem
Dimensions: Frame 18 X 23.5 image 8 X 13.
Ben Avraham Nahmani is a self-taught artist who began painting in his native Meknes, Morocco at age seven. After his immigration to Israel he studied at the Avraham Ofek School of Art in Tel Aviv. He paints in an impressionist style and expresses his love and devotion to Judaism and Israel through varied media techniques including copper beating, pastel colors, and oil paints. Presently, he combines these various media which heighten the joyous tone of his works. Ben Avraham Nhamani draws his subjects from Jewish life, Kabbalah, faith and Jewish tradition. Each of his miniatures has its own motif but all of his themes are tied an overriding theme of world peace.
Ben Avraham Nhamani says "Each painting is for me a special experience both spiritually and artistically as I express it here in a mixed-media: an integrated technique, combining different artistic mediums: pastels, acrylic paint, aquarelle, ink , spray oil; each technique lending its own effect to achieve the total harmonious presence of the work as a whole. The basis of corrugated cardboard of different layers adds depth to the painting and its meaning." One can recognize the holly city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. Ben Avraham Nhamani adds: "The white dove symbolizes peace finally coming; it has an olive twig in its beak as it was when Noah sent a dove after the flood (which also symbolizes wars) to check then if the water dried out and the world could be a peaceful place to live. The dove hangs over Jerusalem and the city is even part of the dove's wing so peaceful it is. The flowers express beauty and growth that exist only when there is peace as well as prosperity represented here by the gold and silver colors. The ideal peace will exist when the Messiah son of David will come expressed here by the Shofar. His coming can be hurried by our good deeds and our longing for him. In microcosm Jerusalem represents every Jewish home which is the basis of the Jewish people and of one's life; spiritually, emotionally and physically as well as stated in the Talmud that the whole blessing a man receives is for his wife and a good wife is attuned to her husband as well. The Shofar expresses the nullification to Gd.'s will as it is at Rosh Hashana (the new Jewish Year) when we take upon ourselves the Yoke of Gd. In a couple or family it means that all the members make an effort and don't have it "their way" but "our way" by compromising."
Ben Avraham Nhamani says "Each painting is for me a special experience both spiritually and artistically as I express it here in a mixed-media: an integrated technique, combining different artistic mediums: pastels, acrylic paint, aquarelle, ink, spray oil; each technique lending its own effect to achieve the total harmonious presence of the work as a whole. The basis of corrugated cardboard of different layers adds depth to the painting and its meaning." One can recognize the holy city of Jerusalem surrounded by its wall and its famous gate living peacefully. While their works bear a certain similarity this is not to be confused with Israeli Indian artist Edward ben Avram from Bombay, India. He has shown in prominent galleries in Safed, Tzfas with the other well known artists from the artists colony such as Nicky Imber, Shalom of Safed, Dorit Gur, Doron Cohen, Frenel Frankel, ·Kaszemacher, Raphael Abecassis...

Katherine Bowling (American, b. 1955)
Oil on spackle on wood
1988
Hand signed, titled and dated verso,
Dimensions: 48"h x 48"w
Provenance: From an Important Private Collection, NYC; bears gallery label from Blum Helman Gallery, NYC
Notes/Literature: Exhibited: "Earth and Sky: Recent Paintings by Katherine Bowling, Joan Nelson and Ellen Phelan", Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College 1992
Katherine Bowling (born 1955, Washington, D.C.) is a modernist painter known for her layered landscape paintings that draw inspiration from nature in the Hudson Valley.
Katherine Bowling grew up in Tidewater, Virginia. She received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978.
Bowling's first New York show, as well as her first solo exhibition, was in 1987.
Bowling's works tend to be luminous landscape paintings that often feature woods and fields as well as roads. Many of her paintings are based on her photographs of woods and fields surrounding and in Schoharie County, where she rents a house. As Molly O'Neill notes in an essay on Bowling and her work, this area is "fifty miles northwest of the vistas that inspired the Hudson River School painters in the mid-1800s."
Bowling focused in particular on the imagery of roads for the theme of her exhibition at Greenberg Van Doren, Divide. As the title implies, writes Lilly Wei in the exhibition's accompanying catalog, Bowling views the roads as "abstract marks in the landscape that divide and order space." Even with roads she has often traveled, Bowling finds something new on closer inspection that alters her perception of the familiar and mundane. Bowling explains that the roads "function as a metaphor for memory and displacement."
In 2001, Bowling exhibited a number of seascape paintings. In her essay on the exhibition, art historian and critic Nancy Princenthal writes that, far from being an aberration from Bowling's typically home-based scenes, the ocean paintings are "a return to childhood memories and life long inclinations. A native of Virginia, she spent her first summers at the Atlantic shore and on the Chesapeake Bay."
Primarily, however, Bowling's works focus on capturing the play of light and shadow. Art critic Eleanor Heartney notes that "Her paintings, like those of Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir, focus on the ephemeral moment and the fleeting impression, conjuring the flicker of sunlight through the trees, the shifting shadows of early evening, the reflections of clouds and foliage glancing across the rippling surface of a lake."
They have a luminist quality to them.
O'Neill argues that Bowling additionally "has an innate sense of abstraction and she ranges happy as an uncaged chicken, pecking elements from the Impressionists' obsession with light; from modern photography; and the drip paintings of Jackson Pollock."
Bowling is influenced by the use of light in the paintings of European Romantics such as J. M. W. Turner and John Constable as well as by the later work of George Inness: Her paintings also recall landscapes by Claude Lorraine, Albert Pinkham Ryder and Camille Corot.
Bowling is known for her use of spackle. She uses a long process of layering and sanding to create the "back-lit" effect found in her paintings.
First, the paintings begin as a photograph which she typically takes near her rented house in the Hudson Valley. Then, she uses these photographs, which serve as her "preliminary drawings," to aid in the painting process. She also paints from memory and direct observation. Bowling paints on square panels of plywood. Bowling considers rectangular pieces to be too horizontal and rife of implications already of landscapes and horizons. She sometimes paints on one of these square and sometimes paints on several square panels together. The seams between these adjoined panels are left visible. Next, Bowling applies layers of spackle. O'Neill remarks that "Inspired, perhaps, by her day job of painting houses, [Bowling] turned to more industrial media: damp vinyl spackle, a building compound that is applied to wooden panels to create a matte, fresco-like surface. Thinned oil pigments are poured, allowed to dry, and then the Sisyphean task of sanding begins." Initial layers generally correspond with the color of the light—varying from pinks, golds, blues, and oranges. Through this layering and sanding, she creates a luminous quality in her landscapes.
Despite rigorous sanding, air bubbles within the spackle layers are revealed occasionally on the surface. Rather than disguise them, Bowling integrates them. Heartney writes that Bowling "allows these irregularities to become part of the painting so that the viewer's perception of the play of light and shadow across the image cannot be separated from an awareness of surface itself."
In later stages of painting, Bowling stands above panels to throw, dribble, and splatter paint with a hair dryer, recalling the techniques of Abstract Expressionist artists such as Jackson Pollock.
