J. A. Hekking was a versatile and talented landscape painter who lived in New York and Connecticut and was active from the early 1850's to the later 1870's. Hekking was a frequent participant at major exhibitions.
His paintings were inspired by the Adirondack and White Mountains, Connecticut, New York views, and the Jersey shore. He worked with Frederick Rondeland. James Reeve Stuart, well-trained portrait painter and teacher, was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, to one of the wealthiest families in the Antebellum South. Ancestors fled from Scotland, and one of them, John, was Superintendent of Indian Affairs of the Southern Colonies.
The Stuart family owned several of the wealthiest plantations in the sea island area of South Carolina, and Stuart's parents owned the Ferry Plantation and it's Mansion "Roupelmonde" on Port Royal Island, adjacent to the Port Royal Ferry. Paul Pascal studied with Albert Maignan. He was a painter of genre, animated landscapes as well as seascapes. He painted Finistère and Cornouaille (Douarnenez, Concarneau, Pont-Aven, Morgat, Sainte-Anne-La-Palud…). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1894 to 1939. Our painting is a view of Kersaint beach near Landunvez. A couple is standing in the foreground, a man seated and a woman seen from behind. They seem to be resting before returning home, after a day collecting seaweed. Kersaint is the land of Abers and "the coast of legends". It is said that Saint Haude, sister of Saint Tanguy, has been buried in Landunvez, and that her tomb is in great veneration there. This region was rich by sea fertilizers. In the 19th century, more than 2,000 cubic meters of kelp were harvested there every year. Maurice Guillemot in his book "Villégiatures d'artistes" talked about Kersaint in 1897: “It is further than Brest, there at the end of France, an unknown village...

Félix Ziem's father was a Croat who settled in Bourgogne in 1814, and his mother was from the same region. He studied at the École d'Architecture et des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, which had been founded and was run by the painter Anatole Devosge, a pupil of David. He received a second prize in drawing and architecture in 1839. In 1841, after a long journey on foot, he settled in Nice, where he began to receive commissions from the city's bourgeoisie. From 1842, he travelled in Italy, visiting Rome, before discovering Venice, which became his second home. Between 1845 to 1892 he visited Venice regularly, often for several months in the year; he worked from his boat, which served as his studio as well as his living quarters.
Ziem was a complete painter, at ease in portraits, still-lifes, flower painting and genre scenes, of both history and contemporary subjects. Nevertheless, he is most known for his landscapes. Frank Reed Whiteside, born in Philadelphia on 20 August 1867, became a student of Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1888-92). He already began exhibiting there during his student years (1887-98). In 1893, he enrolled in the Académie Julian in Paris where he received instruction from Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. After his French academic training, Whiteside taught art in Philadelphia high schools. He took frequent trips to the Southwest between 1890 and 1928 to live with and paint the Zuni Indians. Whiteside depicted ceremonial dances, Zuni buildings, and other genre scenes, usually in blinding afternoon sunlight. He carefully observed the effects of light on vibrant color, using a finely crafted impressionist technique. He was fond of broad areas of color, subtle combinations of hues, and simplified shapes and silhouettes. Whiteside continued to exhibit at the PAFA (1905-15), at the Art Institute of Chicago (1896-1916), at the Carnegie International (1905 and 1907) and at the Corcoran Gallery (1907). He was a member of Philadelphia art societies and beginning in 1909 had a summer studio in Ogunquit, Maine, where he took part in Hamilton Easter Field's discussion groups. Frank's wife, Clara Walker Whiteside, who published Touring New England in 1926, was active in the Ogunquit Art Association.

Léon Augustin Lhermitte was the son of a school teacher. He painted from a very early age and settled in Paris in 1863, enrolling in the École Impériale de Dessin. His teacher was Lecocq de Boisboudran. In the early days of his career he earned a living doing illustrations for boxes of sweets and the catalogues of the cabinet-makers of the Faubourg St-Antoine, as well as publishing houses. In 1879 he went to Great Britain, to which he returned frequently. The same year he met the art dealer Paul Durant-Ruel who exhibited his works. He was one of the founders of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he became vice-president.
Lhermitte initially produced charcoal drawings which revealed his deep feeling for nature. His first attempt, Banks of the Marne near Alfort, caused a sensation. Following this he executed canvases, showing himself to be a fine landscape artist and a skilful draughtsman. He painted scenes from rural life almost exclusively and benefited from exceptional interest generated by the prizes awarded to the works of J. F. Millet. But although he was very much affected by the work of the painter of Angelus, he himself sought only the pictorial element and not a synthetic translation. Many other French masters of the period share his completely objective vision, for example Bastien Lepage, Roll, J. C. Cazin and Rafaelli. Like them, he put into practice very early on the technique of 'clear painting' made fashionable by the pursuit of Impressionism. But this group of artists borrowed from this method only those elements which appealed to public taste, and ignored chromatic elements. Lhermitte also paid the price for the easy success of those early days. His peasants, which found general favour with the public at the time, nowadays seem rather feeble alongside Camille Pissarro's renderings of the same subject.
However, in order to pass judgement on an artist such as Lhermitte, it is necessary to understand the era in which he worked, the era in which Realism was the only acceptable approach. It was in the atmosphere of the 'Théâtre Libre' of Antoine and the novels of Maupassant, Zola and their imitators that this type of art developed. In this context, Lhermitte is recognised as having painted the life of the peasants with great powers of objective observation and great insight into types and physiognomies. Nothing escaped his implacable eye and his bold and vigorous hand was guided by a lucid mind. The simplest elements of nature take on an air of true grandeur in his painting, despite their romantic and sentimental aspects. He is highly regarded both in France and in other countries by art lovers who look for nothing more than an attractive subject expertly painted. Jervis McEntee was a landscape painter, born in 1828 in the Hudson River Valley in Rondout, New York. It was said that 'Nostalgia may well have been McEntee's middle name", and that he, always attempting to stir emotions in his viewers, often attached poetry to his paintings when exhibiting them. At a time when the Civil War and its after effects caused great disruption in America, McEntee's work may have provided a visual escape for the more educated. His works are rich with the colors of autumn and winter, and he, who often painted in the Catskill Mountains, preferred smaller views rather than panoramas. Usually detailed and simple, his works often reflect a sense of loneliness.
As a youngster, McEntee would play in his parents attic, pretending it was an art studio. An unsuccessful attempt at business led McEntee back into the art profession where he studied in New York City under the influence of Frederic E. Church, master of the Hudson River Style, and soon had a showing of his own in the famous Tenth Street Studio Building by 1855.
In about 1858, Mr. and Mrs. McEntee hired English architect Calvert Vaux to build a studio next to McEntee's fathers house in Rondout.
