1865

About the Item

Oil on panel representing a barn, signed JC Cazin on the lower left corner. Jean Charles Cazin (1840-1901) Born in Samer (his father, from Bologna, a doctor, was at the origin of the creation of the Berck hospitals). Jean-Charles studied at the School of Decorative Arts and followed the teaching of Lecoq de Boisbaudran. In 1863, he participated to the Salon des Refusés with Manet. In 1866, he was professor at the Special School of Architecture and became director of the School of Fine Arts Tours and curator of the Museum of the city. In 1871, he stayed in England where he worked ceramics with his wife, Marie. Back in France, he exhibited Le Chantier (1876), painting in which he practices the ancient technique of painting with wax. Begins then the following biblical and mythological compositions for which the members of his family pose with decors inspired by the Littoral. The dunes in Agar and Ismaël (1880), The ramparts of Montreuil-sur-mer in Judith , The Departure (1883) or the cliffs of Equihen in Ulysses after the sinking (1890-1892). After 1883, in the house and in the studio he had built in Equihen, he abandoned the themes of historical paintings and paints landscapes of the Boulogne’s coast, nocturnal, in which he leaves free course to his sensibility: veiled skies, stormy, muted tones of snowy landscapes. In 1889, he won a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition and in 1900, he received the Grand Prize for painting.
