About the Item

This modernist leaning painting depicts Grape Bay in Bermuda. It’s a sunny and pleasant day, which could be most of the year in this island paradise. The artist is Englishman Royce Woolloton Baxter. Born in 1923, he first came to Bermuda in the 1950’s and soon had a studio in Hamilton Parish. He was an architect, designer, painter and author of children’s books. His stylish and distinctively noteworthy map of Bermuda was well received by Bermudians. Baxter returned to England in 2001, passing in Poole six years later. The painting is very colorful and well composed. The water is aqua to deep blue and the vegetation lush and framing the view of the expansive bay. The sunny beach with the rising terrain beyond is dotted with classic white houses. There is a clean and bright modernist feel to Baxter’s style, without relying on abstract conventions. It s signed Baxter lower right and dated 1969. On the reverse side, the work is titled, dated and again signed by Baxter. The oil on board measures 14” x 18” and is in very good condition with no issues to report. The frame seems to be light walnut or maybe teak, with a linen liner. It is of the period and seemingly original. It too is in very good condition, measuring 16 1/2” x 20 1/2” overall. This lovely Bermuda painting is ready to hang on the wall and enjoy.

Vintage Edgartown Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard Oil Painting; James King Bonnar 1960
By James King Bonnar
Located in Baltimore, MD
This painting, by listed artist James King Bonnar (1884-1961), is a lovely scene of Edgartown Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It dates to ca 1960, towards the end of his career. There is a lot of action and detail presented, as the harbor is busy, likely in full summer season. The variety of boats, men working them and an abundance of rigging fill the composition. Bonnar, however, left enough of the foreground water clear to show off his skills of reflection and slight movement to the water. Full sail boats glide past in the background. A hillside of Edgartown is depicted beyond, with a few of its buildings highlighted. The sky is blue with just a hint of high clouds...
