'Boy' 2003 by American artist, Kim McCarty. Watercolor on paper, 29.75 x 22.25 in. (framed). This work on paper expresses the fragile vulnerability of adolescence. By using a “wet into wet” watercolor medium, the artist conveys the transitory and emergent state. The figures heads become too large for their small, narrow bodies, their hands too large for their arms. The translucent watercolor expresses both the flaws and perfection. Kim McCarty is known for her nubile and waif-like figurative watercolors in muted hues, which she likens to “blurry afterimages drifting past closed eyelids.” McCarty began working with the medium in 1993, after a fire destroyed her studio and she could no longer find a space with proper ventilation for working with oil paint and became quickly intrigued with watercolor’s transparency, immediacy, and “unforgiving qualities.” She works in a wet-on-wet technique, in which watercolor is applied to a moistened sheet of paper—a technique that allows for very little control over the final image because of the pigment’s tendency to spread. For McCarty, this style corresponds to the longing, loss, and vulnerability embodied in her subjects. Argentine painter. He was born in Buenos Aires on February 21, 1915. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts and then, for two years, at the Argentine Institute of Graphic Arts, guided by the painter Lino Spilimbergo. He exhibited for the first time in 1939 as a member of the Orión Group. Starting in 1946 he exhibited individually and in various salons, obtaining numerous rewards, among them: ?? In 1959 he won the Grand Prize at the National Hall, the Mar del Plata Hall and the Municipal Hall. In 1963 the National Academy of Fine Arts awarded him the Dr. Augusto Palanza Prize. In 1950-51, he visited Spain, France, Italy, and England; in 1955-56 he traveled to the US and in 1966-67 he traveled to Spain, Portugal, France and Belgium. This mixed media on paper from the seminal artist Artis Lane is one of the many model paintings from her long and illustrious career. The subject is a nude male standing in pose. Artis Lane, in her many nudes, chose to depict a diversity of bodies, of all shapes, colors, and sizes. This work was recently exhibited adjunct to the "Steps Towards Justice: Artis Lane's Portraits of Rosa Parks" exhibition at Collected Detroit in 2021. Most recently in January 2021 Ms. Lanes' dynamic sculpture bust of Rosa Parks was chosen from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC to reside in the President's Oval Office as a reminder to all who visit or see it via press photographs of her courageous demand for equal rights. She knew many celebrities, movie stars and individuals who moved in those circles. She was a sought after portrait painter. This particular painting of the famous movie star, Zsa Zsa Gabor, shows why. Artis has captured the personal essence of her subject, a warm, friendly woman, though famous, is not absorbed in her notoriety. This piece is signed by the artist on the lower right. Born Artis Marie Shreve in 1927, near an all-Black village in North Buxton, Ontario, Canada. After three years of art college in Toronto, Canada, Artis moved to Detroit where she met and married journalist and activist Bill Lane. In Detroit Artis Lane continued her training at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design.
