Erin Parish (American, b. 1966) 40004"Sugar High Undertow" Hand signed and dated 2005 verso, Oil and resin on panel. 18"h x 24"w Erin Parish ( 1966 -, St. Louis, MO) is an American painter and independent curator. She graduated from Bennington College in 1988 with a B.A. and Queens College with an M.F.A. in 1990. Parish is the daughter of four artists. As a child growing up] talk in her family focused on the New York Times and the changing commercial and philosophical views of the art world. She has been exhibiting regularly since the age of 18 and has been a practicing artist for nearly four decades. While her early influences range from Joseph Cornell to the German Expressionist artists and the Neue Wilde artists of the 1980s, she now draws inspiration from the Hudson River School artists, as well as Mariko Mori, Yayoi Kusama and Japanese woodcuts by Hokusai and Hiroshige. She is also influenced by the Japanese principles of Wabi-sabi and Yugen. Allen Kubach (American) "Untitled: Multicolored Linear Abstract" , Acrylic on Canvas, Signed on rear canvas, Early 21th Century, 2005 Colors: Yellow, Orange, Red, Green, Blue Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. Ryan Humphrey (born 1971) is an American artist who currently lives and works in New York City. Education: BFA, Ohio University, MFA, Hunter College, New York 1999; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, 2001; Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, NY, 2005-2006 Ryan Humphrey grew up in a small town in Ohio building things in his yard, riding BMX bikes and skateboarding. He then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the next three years to work at The Carnegie Museum of Art and obtain a commercial art degree where he developed an interest in contemporary fine art. This inspired him (along with a scholarship) to attend Ohio University where he earned his BFA in Sculpture. After moving to New York City he received his MFA from Hunter College, paying his way through school by working at The Dia Center for the Arts. After attending The Skowhegan summer residency program in Maine he worked for The Andy Warhol Foundation and participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He has exhibited extensively. He currently lives and works in New York City. His work has been featured in the traveling exhibition Will Boys Be Boys? His large-scale installation, titled Fast Forward (2009), included BMX ramps adjacent to a wall-to-ceiling assemblage tapestry, collection of trophies and customized BMX bikes, and he continued this theme in his installation Look for the dream that keeps coming back (2010) at Kunsthalle Galapagos. Humphrey expresses his growing up in BMX and skateboard culture through his art. The assemblage also included several paintings, created by the artist for the exhibition, and several sculptures of BMX bike wheels. The paintings were small drips that recall the works of Jackson Pollock, and the BMX sculptures are similar to Marcel Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel. The installation included an opening night performance by legendary BMX pro Dizz Hicks and Ryan Humphrey on the ramps. An edition of 20 silkscreen posters was made by the artist, and signed by himself and Dizz Hicks, to commemorate the event. He was included in the show 5 X 5 at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris.
