About the Item

The American Art Gallery takes immense pride in offering "The Girl - A Study for the Slav Epic," an authentic original work by the celebrated Art Nouveau icon, Alphonse Mucha. Dating back to 1911, this oil on canvas is a profound piece of Mucha’s preparatory process for his magnum opus, the Slav Epic. Originating directly from Mucha's hands, this study was safeguarded by a local family during the upheaval of 1939 where the theft and destruction was so prevalent amidst the war. The work later emerged for public acquisition in 2004 in Prague, where it was verified authentic by the Czech government in Brno. Embodying resilience, cultural heritage, and artistic vision, this study features Mucha's distinctive signature, reflecting an era renowned for its artistic innovation and elegance. The London gallery’s appraisal of £105,000 in 2004 corroborates its significant value, and its provenance is further established by the National Museum at Brno's authentication. Investment: Investing in "The Girl - A Study for the Slav Epic" transcends mere ownership of a rare art piece; it is a commitment to the enduring legacy of Alphonse Mucha, one of the defining figures of the Art Nouveau movement. Mucha’s contribution to art history with the Slav Epic—a series celebrated for its grandeur and depth of Slavic history—is unparalleled, and "The Girl" offers a tangible connection to this monumental work. This study represents a pivotal moment in Mucha’s artistic journey, providing collectors with a direct link to his creative process. As a study, it offers an intimacy and insight into the artist’s methodology that final works often do not reveal, thereby holding significant appeal to both academics and enthusiasts. This nuanced layer of connection—to both the artist and the cultural narrative he depicts—establishes the piece as not only a masterpiece of the era but also as a piece of Mucha's personal art historical footprint. The provenance of "The Girl" enriches its investment value: its survival through the perils of World War II, the meticulous stewardship by a local private family, and its validation by the Brno government. Each aspect of its history contributes to its rarity and desirability in the art market. Moreover, with the rising interest in repatriating artworks of cultural significance, owning a piece with such a storied past presents a unique opportunity for potential appreciation. As art from this period and of this caliber becomes increasingly scarce, "The Girl" is poised to not only retain but grow in value, making it an astute acquisition for the discerning collector. In the context of the current art market, where the appreciation for Mucha's work continues to grow, "The Girl" is an exceptional investment. It promises to be a centerpiece of any collection, appreciated not just for its aesthetic and historical significance but also for its potential capital appreciation.

"Princess Hyacinthe" Original 1911 Lithograph, Alphonse Mucha
By Alphonse Mucha
Located in Chicago, IL
“One of Mucha’s best Czech posters, printed by the firm of V. Neubert in the Smichov quarter of Prague, was for Princezna Hyacinta, a fairy-tale ballet and pantomime with music by Oskar Nedbal and libretto by Ladislav Novák. The portrait of the popular actress Andula Sedlácková as the princess dominates the poster. The plot develops as a dream of a village blacksmith who falls asleep after digging for a buried treasure. In his dreams he becomes lord of a castle, and his daughter Hanicka becomes the Princess Hyacinth. Of her three suitors, one is a sorcerer who abducts her to his underground palace, but she is rescued by a poor knight who looks like her real-life lover. Mucha used the motif of the hyacinth throughout the entire design, from embroideries to silver jewelry, and for an elaborate circle sparkling against the mossy green background. The portrait of the actress is seen against a sky full of stars and encircled with images from the dream: the blacksmith’s tools...
