"Beatificado" Modern Tabloid Inspired Religious Social Commentary Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Modern, large scale social commentary painting by California artist John Valdez. Comes with the original sketch as well as a book about the artist. Inspired by the cover of a Mexican tabloid, Valadez invites the viewer to examine the duality of a society that mourns the death of an iconic religious leader and neglects those close to them who are perhaps deemed not worthy of consideration. The bold red headline reads “El cardenal Gabiri será beatificado” (Cardinal Gabiri will be beatified) above a large accompanying image of the cardinal in his casket and two smaller images, one of sobbing mourners and another of the cardinal sitting at the altar. Dividing the image is a subhead that reads, “El pueblo católico está de luto” (the Catholic people are mourning) placed above a depiction of four young boys who seem to be sniffing glue. The adjacent text reads “The indifference of the adults is the cause behind the issues these forgotten children have to live.” This work was exhibited at the Pacific Standard Time, Long Beach Museum of Art in 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2012, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL in 2013. Signed by artist in front lower right corner as well as titled and dated in front lower left corner. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: John Valadez...

Backyard
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
In "Backyard," the central figure—a woman—commands attention against a backdrop of natural beauty. She stands in her own space, seemingly lost in thought, creating an atmosphere of both stillness and introspection. Adetayo's portrayal of this woman invites viewers to consider the emotions and thoughts that might be coursing through her mind. Is she reflecting on memories? Contemplating her place in the world? The interpretation becomes a personal journey for each observer. The landscape that envelops the woman is not just a passive backdrop but a powerful metaphor. Just as the external world shapes our internal experiences, the landscape symbolizes the myriad influences that contribute to one's sense of self. The woman's connection to the environment around her mirrors the intricate relationship between identity and surroundings. The notion of a "backyard" often evokes a sense of familiarity and intimacy. It is a space that is uniquely personal, and this artwork invites us to ponder what this personal space means for the woman depicted. In much the same way, we are all shaped by our own "backyards"—our histories, cultures, and experiences that come together to form our individual identities. The tranquility of the artwork encourages viewers to embrace the beauty of stillness and contemplation. In a world that often moves at breakneck speed, "Backyard" reminds us of the value of taking a moment to disconnect, reflect, and connect with our own thoughts and emotions. The woman's posture, relaxed and poised, suggests that she is attuned to this moment of quiet introspection. Adetayo's choice to depict a woman adds an additional layer of significance. Historically, women have been portrayed as subjects of scrutiny and objectification, often with their thoughts and emotions overlooked. "Backyard" challenges this norm by presenting a woman as the focal point of a scene that radiates depth and complexity. While "Backyard" is a singular artwork with a specific subject, its themes resonate universally. Regardless of gender or background, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on their own personal landscapes, the spaces they occupy, and the introspective moments that shape their lives. Adetayo's ability to capture such universal themes while maintaining a unique and personal touch is a testament to the power of art to bridge gaps and foster connections across diverse audiences. Mid Century Expressway Proposal Over Norman Rockwell Town
Located in Miami, FL
Artist Richard Erdoes is as undervalued as he is overlooked. Rarely does an artwork come on that market that combines sharp-witted originality with mind-boggling technical proficiency. In “Mid-Century Expressway,” Erodes painstakingly draws a birds-eye view of a Norman Rockwell-like town buzzing with activity. He paints far away and close up in one image. Each block has its own charming Americana story unfolding. The closer the viewer gets to each scene, the more detail is revealed. In black and white, the artist describes not only the architecture and infrastructure but also human activity - lot's of it. Erodes’s congested town is humming. Overflowing trains, packed busses, zooming cars, stuffed trucks, frenzied pedestrians and even a marching band is depicted with great whit. But do not worry. Progress is coming and all will be well. Superimposed onto this black and white clogged urban scene is a proposed new highway. It's painted in a punchy green and creates an unexpectedly distinct design. The artwork was most likely done for Fortune Magazine or the like. Notice he Esso Gasoline signs...
