In 1917 he attended classes briefly at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1920, after the revolution and civil war, during which he may have served as a Red soldier, he made his way to Paris, where, since his adolescence, he had always dreamed of being a painter in the city's vibrant artistic climate. To welcome him in Paris were Larionov (this was the time of the Ballets Russes) and Soutine, who were full of the experience of living along with Chagall, Modigliani and many others in La Ruche, the famous rotunda built for the Paris Exposition and later used for artists' studios. Making a living as best he could, Tereshkovich went to draw at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière. He joined the Montparnasse circle of Kisling, Kremen and Lanskoy and later that of Roland Oudot, Maurice Brianchon and Raymond Legueult. Later they went on to form Réalité Poétique (Poetic Reality), a spontaneous group of painters that only became formalised in 1948. Tereshkovich joined the French Foreign Legion in 1939 but was demobilised in 1940. In 1944 he fled with his family to Avallon, where he had often painted. From 1950 he lived and worked in Menton, travelling, either in search of new subject matter or for pleasure, and once every four years went to the Olympic Games, to indulge his taste for sport. When Tereshkovich arrived in Paris he was overwhelmed by it, at first letting himself simply be carried away like a tourist, by shows like the French Can-Can, whose young dancers he painted both on stage and backstage; these paintings brought him some success. In 1933, he designed sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. That year, he also married. His wife became his favourite model, and she was joined later by their two daughters, in countless family scenes that show his evident happiness down the years. He painted a wide variety of subjects, including Portrait of Frédéric Lefèvre, L'Espagnole, La Belle Danoise, and Avallon Town Crier, all of which were typical of his style. He also painted still-lifes and landscapes, such as Church near Avallon and Landscape at Villeneuve, and many horse racing scenes (he was a great racing enthusiast). In addition, he also produced many lithographs, some of which were illustrations for works by Colette or Chekhov, as well as designs for ceramics and tapestries. In his landscapes of the outskirts of Paris and the nearby countryside he would seize on a sudden intense ray of light piercing the mists on the Seine and turn it into something quite personal. During his travels, he went in search of ever more distant landscapes, both in France and beyond. Over the years, he also painted many portraits of his painter friends and others whom he met. Some of these portraits are entirely predictable, such as that of Bonnard, for whom he had nothing but admiration, but some of his other subjects are more surprising. These include: Soutine, Bonnard, Matisse, Utrillo, Vlaminck, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Rouault, Derain, Friesz, Van Dongen and Braque. Tereshkovich exhibited in various group exhibitions, including: from 1925 at the Salon d'Automne, Paris; in 1929, in Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery, along with Chagall, Soutine, Zadkine and Puni (the exhibition of Russian artists working in France). He went on to show work in many exhibitions around the world, such as: 1951, 1st Menton Biennale, where he won the Grand Prix; 1954 to 1958, 1963, the École de Paris exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier; regularly at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps; 1972 Galerie des Granges, Geneva, Les Maîtres de la Réalité Poétique; and 2003, Musée de Montmartre, Paris, A Russian Summer in Montmartre: St Petersburg Artists in Paris in the Early 20th Century. He also showed work in solo exhibitions: 1927 Paris, Galerie Ch. Aug. This superb British Interior Camden Town School portrait oil painting is by Slade School artist Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades. Painted in 1932, the sitter is the artist's aunt. The composition is a seated half portrait of Rhoades aunt, sat at a table with bookshelves, paintings and ornaments behind her as she looks at a paper. It is a sympathetic portrait suggesting his fondness for his aunt and an excellent example of a Slade School portrait interior. Signed and dated RHOADES 32 lower right. Provenance. Alfred Stiles and Sons label verso. Also signed on stretcher. Condition. Oil on canvas, 18 inches by 14 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 25 inches by 21 inches and in good condition. Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades (1898-1980). Rhoades attended Dulwich College where his education included drawing from classical casts. After Dulwich he spent two years at Clapham Art School under L C Nightingale. He served in the Marines from 1917 to 1919. Rhoades then studied at Slade School between 1919 and 1924 under Tonks. he socialised with fellow artists Albert Houthueson, Percy Horton, Charles Mahoney and James Laver. Rhoades then spent two years at Christopher Turnor's country house painting family portraits, some murals, landscapes and making many drawings. In 1928 Rhoades taught at the Working Man’s College in Crowndale Road, London. In 1929 Geoffrey followed Percy Horton as the art master at Bishop’s Stortford College, remaining in this post for fifteen years. He was a friend and coleague to Walter Strachan. In 1934 Rhoades married Joan Jenner and they lived in London and had a son, Peter who also became an artist. In 1935 the Tate (Britain) bought his “Winter Afternoon, Chalk Farm” landscape. After the onset of the Second World War blitz, they moved house to Stebbing in Essex. They lived near to Great Bardfield where the very prestigious artists’ group including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Michael Rothenstein and a number of other distinguished artists had collected away from London. Rhoades and his wife were intimate members of this creative community throughout the course of the war. Their final move was to Seven Stars, Cuddington on the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire border to be nearer to Oxford. Percy Horton was appointed Ruskin Master of Drawing at the Ruskin School, University of Oxford and Joan became his secretary. Horton employed Geoffrey as a tutor at the School and this began a very long relationship with the Ruskin, which was then housed in the Ashmolean Museum, and Oxford for both of them. We have included the artist's biography below please contact the gallery for additional information, Robert McIntosh (1916-2010) Robert McIntosh was born on March 11, 1916 near San Francisco, in Vallejo, California, the second son of Harry and Jesusita Coronado McIntosh. He found his lifelong passion for painting by the time he was ten years old and never swayed from his calling. The family moved to Stockton when Robert was 12. Their home was just six blocks from the newly opened Haggin Museum, filled with a treasure trove of European and American paintings. He became particularly enamored with the fine examples of 19th century French pastoral landscapes. As teens, Robert and his brother Harrison befriended local painter Arthur Haddock who taught them the craft of art and brought them along on outdoor painting trips. Robert also became skilled at drawing portraits that captured the subject's personality. Soon, the sheer joy of expressing himself this way became a consuming interest. ​When not sketching, McIntosh would wander the stacks of books at the public library, discovering and studying the Masters - in particular, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Whistler. At a Gauguin exhibit at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, Robert discovered a "whole new world of color" and the importance of designing the space in the eternal rectangle. "I envision a frame around everything I see, "he admitted. "The artists' challenge is to put something meaningful, interesting or beautiful in that space." ​In 1934 McIntosh won a competition for a scholarship to the Art Center School of Design, the first award they ever bestowed. The entire family moved to Los Angeles and a new vista opened to the young artist, both visually and culturally. “Graduation Day” is emblematic of mid-century American Illustration. But the real story of this storytelling work is that it embodies the lost art of portrait painting and graphic design. Alex Ross borrows on the classical tradition and flaunts his skills as a narrative painter. In “Graduation Day”, he paints a complex composition involving at least thirteen portraits. The subjects are beautifully rendered and lit. They are set against a dark grey background and jump off the surface at the viewer. The composition is complexly designed. The future graduate in the red jacket engaging with a girl photographer is a compositional device that leads the viewer's eye to the main subject - a father congratulating his son on graduating from medical school. Creating art that relies on facial expressions and body gestures is a talent absent in contemporary art. Why? It’s very hard to do and takes years and training and practice to get it right. Despite Alex Ross's folksy subject matter, this work is a high example of naturalism and representation by an important member of the Golden Age of American Illustration.
