This is a unique work which comes with a Certificate of Provenance from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts issued by Christie’s, the acting registrar of The Foundation. The work is stamped on the verso by the Estate of the Artist and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. A unique Foundation number is written on the verso. Provenance: From the Estate of the Artist, to The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, to current owner Beginning in the late 1950s, Warhol began carrying a Polaroid camera documenting his friends as he moved through New York society. In the mid-1960s, Warhol began using a camera for his art-making process when he would take subjects - often leaders in the art world, such as collectors and gallerists, or his friends - to photo booths near the original (“Silver”) Factory in Times Square. This was Warhol’s initial foray into serial repetition and removing the artist’s hand altogether. Photo booth strips became source material for Warhol’s paintings of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including iconic works such as the paintings of Edith Skull and Holly Solomon. In the 1970s, Warhol continued using the Polaroid as ‘his date’ on all his social outings and travels. However, in 1977, Zurich-based art dealer Thomas Amman gave Warhol a 35mm Minox camera, at which point he began documenting nearly every day of his life with black-and-white photos (unique silver gelatin prints usually measuring 8” x 10”). Around the same time, Warhol purchased a Polaroid Big Shot camera, for use at The Factory to create the singular vocabulary of his prints and paintings. From this studio process, Warhol created his largest body of work.
