Monica Vitti is born in Rome on November 3, 1931. Admitted in 1950 to the Academy of Dramatic Art (where she will return in 1986 as a teacher), and graduated in 1953, she immediately tackles the scenes in L'avaro di Molière (1954), The island of the parrots of S. Tofano (1954), They founded a city of C. Meano (1954), Mother Courage and her children of B. Brecht (1954). Between 1956 and 1959 she also participated in television broadcasts and acted in numerous adaptations of famous theatrical texts. She made her film debut playing secondary parts in Laugh, Laugh, Laugh! by E. Anton, 1955; A mink coat by G. Pellegrini, 1956; Le dritte di M. Amendola, 1958. Dubbing actress of Il scido di M. Antonioni (1957), she meets the director who, after having directed her to the theater in I am a camera by J. Van Druten (1957) and in Secret Scandals by Antonioni and E. Bartolini (1957), he calls her as the protagonist in L'avventura (1960), a film with which V. is a leading actress. Always led by Antonioni, from now on she will play suffering characters who embody a profound crisis of feelings. Apart from a brief television parenthesis (a transposition of the short story The White Nights by F. Dostoevskij, directed by V. Cottafavi), La notte (1961), L'eclisse (1962) and Deserto rosso (1963) belong to a happy partnership with Antonioni (who will be revived episodically for the production of The Mystery of Oberwald [1980], a courageous experiment of intertwining cinema and electronic techniques, propitiated by the exhumation of a play by J. The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to announce, 25 Years of Polaroids, a new exhibit by Jose Picayo. The opening reception will be held Wednesday, November 7th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit will run through January 6, 2019.
In this exhibition, Picayo seeks to revive the concept of unadulterated beauty captured as a single moment in time. An unapologetic user of film, Picayo prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” For Picayo, Polaroid film is a medium where he can capture something as is – a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough.
25 Years of Polaroids showcases Picayo’s most iconic work. This exhibit includes personal photographs of Cuba from 1994, Polaroid image transfers showcasing his impressive use of visual texture and his eye for fashion. Also included are his Atget-esque tree portraits from a New Jersey public arboretum in 2012. Additionally, a selection of 8” x 10” Polaroids from Mugshots 2008, will be included, exploring how a person’s soul can be captured in what appear to be basic photographs. The main questions at the heart of Picayo’s photography stem from the mystery of human perception and the precious things that are lost to time.
The invitational image, Rotating Doll, 1997, features a multi-paneled display of polaroids which cover an entire length of a wall. These 20” x 24” Polaroids appear larger than life and were given much praise in Picayo’s recent exhibit Polaroids 2016 at The Erie Museum in Erie, PA. This series stems from a collection of children’s dolls Picayo has found over the years, each one with its own strange and authentic story to tell. By cultivating a deteriorated look reminiscent of antique fresco painting, Picayo examines time using the inanimate faces of broken dolls, reflecting on the objects we hold dear and how they fall apart as we try to hold onto them.
Picayo speaks of his own influences, crediting photographers Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, and Edward Curtis, Michael Disfarmer, and Torkil Gudnason with impact on both his fine and commercial art. He is well known for his work in fashion, but for Picayo his personal and commercial work are interrelated, each extensions of one another. Born in Cuba, Picayo immigrated to Puerto Rico during his childhood and settled in New York City by the early 80s. After receiving his BFA from Parsons School of Design, Picayo began his professional career as a commercial photographer, shooting for magazines such as Vanity Fair, Sassy, Taxi, and Connoisseur. Picayo’s work has since appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, L.A. Style, New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rolling Stone, NY Magazine, HG, and Elle Décor. Picayo has held nine solo exhibits to date at the Robin Rice Gallery.

Early 20th Century Photograph -- Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode
Located in Soquel, CA
"Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode" a Lithobrome photograh by Sigismund Blumann (American, 1872-1956). Signed "Sigismund Blumann" lower right. Titled "Sidewalk Club of the Motherlode" on verso. Image size, 11.25"H x 13.25"W. Between 1923 and 1932, his pictures were accepted at photographic salons in Amsterdam, Toronto, Rochester, Seattle, and Los Angeles. In 1927, a one-person exhibition of his bromoil prints traveled to camera clubs in Chicago, Akron, Cincinnati, and New York. In addition to bromoil, a process that yields pointillistic images, Blumann utilized such unusual processes as kallitype (Vandyke brown), lithobrome, and pastelograph (the latter two probably his own inventions) to create original photographs using chemical processes he invented.
Sigismund Blumann (1872–1956) (figure 1) was a prominent tastemaker in Californian photography during the 1920s and 1930s. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area for his entire career, he edited magazines, wrote books, and made creative photographs. From 1924 to 1933 Blumann edited Camera Craft, the leading West Coast photographic monthly. Subsequently he established his own periodical, Photo Art Monthly, which he published until 1940.
