100th Anniversary Celebration Coffret # 6 - Bangkok - 1956 - Vintage Photography
Located in Brussels, BE
Artwork sold in perfect condition Fabrizio La Torre’s 100th Anniversary Celebration (1921-2021) Set # 6 - Bangkok Limited edition of 100 Coffrets for each themes, all artworks printed on fine art papers later (2020-2021) from black & white negatives processed in 1956 To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Italian photographer Fabrizio La Torre, Brussels Art Edition has chosen to publish 12 thematic “Celebration Boxes”, each of 6 photos, and each box published in only 100 copies at an exceptional price. The chosen themes are: Rome, the Vatican, New York, Canada, Bangkok, Thailand, Hong Kong, women, children, transport, commerce and traders, and maritime navigation. Made between 1955 and 1966, these photos were digitized during the artist's lifetime and the technical parameters (framing, contrast, light, etc.) were approved by him. These are high quality fine art prints in A4 format (21 x 29.7 cm), on Baryté 310 gr Fine Art paper with museum quality pigment inks. Each box contains a numbered certificate of origin. The very attractive price makes these boxes the ideal gift to offer to all lovers of vintage photos, but also an original set to decorate a room or an office, or only to indulge yourself and feed your collection. The production of these sets will be spread over four months until May 2021, (three themes per month) and they will be sold while stocks last. No reprints will be made. All these photos are dated 1956-61, because the photographer had his films developed in his usual laboratory in Rome when he returned there on vacation. The exact date of the shots is therefore unknown. - "I nuovi elefanti". Through the streets of Bangkok, trams, often built by a Belgian company, carried their heavy carcasses at a pace barely faster than a walking elephant. - "Nebbia mattutina". The morning mist slowly dissipates around the Temple of the Golden Mountain...

Provenance: Private collection. Frame Size: 20.63 in high (52.5 cm) x 16.75 in wide (42.5 cm) x 1.57 in deep (4 cm). Image Size: 5.51 in high (14.2 cm) x 7.48 in wide (19.8 cm). French typed legend, copyright credit, and ink stamp at the back that read: "Course de traineaux dans un parc a New York. Sur la neige qui recouvre les allées du Central Park Casino a new York, un groupe d'artistes a eu l'idée d'organiser une course de traineaux - voici une vue de la course - Photos NYT - NY 5/1/34 - SP." (Sled race in a New York park. On the snow covering the paths of the Central Park Casino in New York, a group of artists had the idea of organizing a sled race - here is a view of the race - Photos NYT - NY 5/ 1 /34 - SP.) Note: The Central Park Casino, originally the Ladies' Refreshment Salon, was a restaurant in Central Park, near East 72nd Street in Manhattan, New York City. The name of the building came from the Italian for "little house," but the Casino itself was never a gambling business. Originally, Calvert Vaux designed the building in 1862 as part of the Greensward Plan for Central Park. The original plan was a wooden chalet-style structure with a broad hip roof. Before construction began, however, Vaux decided that a more permanent building was needed. The following year, with the assistance of Edward C. Miller and Jacob Wrey Mould, the Casino was redesigned as a Gothic Revival stone structure. The building opened in early 1864 as a restaurant planned for unaccompanied female visitors to Central Park and was one of Central Park's three original restaurants. Soon, it was patronized by both men and women. The building that housed the Casino belonged to the City of New York, and the City often leased the Casino to independent operators. In the early 1920s, the Casino was rundown and renovated during the winter of 1921–1922. Jimmy Walker, mayor of New York City during the late 1920s, frequented the Casino and reportedly spent more time there than in New York City Hall. Besides entertaining elite guests in the restaurant, Walker had an office in the Casino and conducted city administration there while meeting with political cronies. In 1929, Walker terminated the lease of C.F. Zittel and allowed a friend, Sidney Solomon, to transform the Casino into one of New York's most expensive nightclubs. In February 1929, they released the new project. Solomon changed the Casino's interior using a design from Viennese designer Joseph Urban, though he kept the exterior mostly the same. The renovated Casino reopened on June 4, 1929. When the Great Depression hit four months after the Casino reopened, the nightclub faced increasing criticism for operating on city land while maintaining prices only the wealthiest New York residents could afford. In 1930, as part of the enforcement of Prohibition, the United States government raided the Casino and seized alcoholic beverages. Walker's successor, Fiorello H. La Guardia, and his parks commissioner Robert Moses, who held a vendetta against Walker, wanted to tear down the Casino to build a playground on the site. In 1934, Moses served an eviction order on the Casino's management. When the Parks Association of New York City objected...

First Looks over Canada, 1955 - 12 ex - Limited Ed - Black & White Photography
Located in Brussels, BE
Artwork sold in perfect condition Coffret Collector # 1 from a limited editon of 5 Each coffret is including 12 Fine Art Limited Edition Prints up to 13 x 19 inches These photos were made in 1955, printed later, the negative was digitized during the artist's lifetime and the technical parameters (framing, contrast, light, etc.) was approved by him. These are very high quality fine art prints on 310 gr/m² with museum quality pigment inks. During the 15 years during which he gave himself to photography, Fabrizio La Torre traveled to Italy, Europe, North America and Asia. From everywhere he brought back photos that tell of the human, universal and soul-filled condition, to which he was so sensitive. Here is First Look at Canada, where Fabrizio La Torre stayed in November and December 1955, on a 6-month trip to North America which also took him to Canada and California. In Montreal, he could not resist the urge to travel aboard the "Canadian", the most modern and luxurious version of the Canadian Pacific train, inaugurated a few months earlier, on April 24, 1955. And even if the official story of this company claims that as from this inauguration the train was pulled by modern diesel locomotives, the heavy steam engines are still used, to the delight of the photographer who knows how to play with their big white plumes. In stations, on platforms, steam is everywhere; while the temperature is around - 30°C, steam is welcome to thaw the axles, often blocked by ice. 1 – « The Rex Hotel », Toronto, November 1955. A cold, gray day where the snow is not far away, silhouettes of men in hats walking past the Rex Hotel. It has not yet become the legendary venue for all jazz concerts in Toronto. But for its comfortable rooms and its reasonable prices, this is where Fabrizio La Torre chose to stay. 2 – « On Wellington Street », Toronto November 1955. The Gooderham building which remains one of the city symbols today, now surrounded by imposing skyscrapers while back then it was it’s turret that stared at the passer-by and the circulation of all its majesty . 3 – « Pietra e ferro », Stone and iron, Toronto November 1955. In every North American city where he passes, Fabrizio La Torre is struck by the overwhelming mass of buildings and the ubiquity of large cars, which he compares to living rooms. For this former naval officer accustomed to scanning around him with binoculars, the horizon is seems short. And nature is missing too: no tree grow outside the parks where they are confined. 4 – « Billiards », Toronto November 1955. Billiards, shoe shiners, restaurants, there is nothing lacking in the happiness of these gentlemen whose silhouettes in long coats and small hats definitely evoke the atmosphere of American movies of those years. 5 – « La partita di Hockey », Canada November 1955. An improvised hockey game...

Unique Framed Signed and dated on verso This photograph is part of the MoMA permanent collection. René Groebli (born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1927) secured his place among the elite of Swiss post-war photographers with his 1949 portfolio MAGIE DER SCHIENE (RAIL MAGIC). In the early fifties Groebli worked as reporter for Life, Picture Post and other international magazines. During the following years he owned a studio for industrial and advertising photography. In 1957 the American Color Annual named him MASTER OF COLOR. In the early 80s Groebli stopped working for advertising and rediscovered for himself the possibilities of expression that black & white photography offers. In 1999 the Zurich Kunsthaus (Art Museum) showed a representative selection of his photographs from the years 1946 to 1996. With NUDES René Groebli gives us a work for sensuous pleasure that had grown over half a century. In the long history of sensual art photography one is hard pressed to find anyone comparable to the Swiss photo...

Michael Mardikes Benton walking dog (Thomas Hart Benton Plate #6) Year: 1956, 2021 Pigment Ink on Archival Paper Photograph Image Size: 19x13.5 in Paper Size: 22x17 in Edition: Unique Monogrammed by hand Label signed and numbered by Estate Representative COA provided by Authorizing Body Additional COA provided by representing Gallery Ref.: 924802-908 Image included in the exhibition An Artist at Home in America: Michael Mardikes’ Photographs of Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Public Library (November 20, 2021-May 15, 2022) One night in late 2020, as Nick Vedros was leaving the home of his Aunt Myrt and Uncle Michael Mardikes, his aunt suddenly asked him, “What are we going to do with all the negatives?” The noted Kansas City photographer was not sure what his 89-year-old aunt was talking about, until she handed him a notebook filled with more than 1000 negatives chronicling Thomas Hart Benton at home and in his studio. They had been filed away for almost seven decades. This startling discovery was the inspiration for the exhibition, “An Artist at Home in America: Michael Mardikes’ Photographs of Thomas Hart Benton” on view at the Kansas City Public Library Central Library. The exhibition is a must-see, not just for fans of Thomas Hart Benton but for devotees of exemplary photojournalism. Of the 1,080 photographs Mardikes took, only four had been published in an article he wrote for “This Month in Kansas City” magazine in 1966. The others were never printed, nor was their existence common knowledge. Although Vedros had been aware of his uncle’s assignment with Benton, he was stunned to discover that so much additional material existed. Vedros, who decided at age 12 to become a photographer himself after seeing his uncle’s work, was determined to organize an exhibition, and was especially interested in doing it as quickly as possible given his uncle’s advanced age and increasing frailty. Collaborating with Dan White, a photographer, master printer and friend since their time together at the University of Missouri journalism school, they selected 34 images to be printed and framed, researching the details with Steve Sitton, the director of the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio Historic Site. Michael Mardikes had had a brief career as a commercial photographer before going on to work in management at the Ford Motor Company and later at UMKC. He made the acquaintance of Benton through Eugene Pyle, a former student of Benton’s and Mardikes’ photography instructor at the Art Institute. In 1955, Benton asked Mardikes to photograph him; Mardikes visited Benton 35 to 40 times, over a period of a few months in late 1955 and early 1956. Sitton told Vedros that not only was Mardikes’ amount of access incredible, but that the resulting body of work was unmatched. As the project progressed, Benton became focused on a mural commission for the River Club in 1956. Henry Adams, preeminent Benton scholar and former curator at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, provided some context for this particular work: “The commission to paint ‘Traders at Westport Landing’ came at a low point in Benton’s career, 1956, and initiated the late phase of Benton’s mural paintings. It was the first of a series of murals depicting the exploration and settlement of the west, which culminated in the Truman Library mural, which was completed in 1962. All these murals feature trading and friendly contact with the Indians, rather than conflict, and are arresting in their bright color and meticulous rendering of carefully researched detail. The River Club, which commissioned ‘Traders at Westport Landing,’ overlooks the Missouri River and has a panoramic view very similar to the one in Benton’s painting.” This group of black and white photos not only documents the artist’s working process but also reveals other aspects of his daily life: one memorable image reveals Rita Benton massaging her husband’s stiff shoulders after a long day in his studio. Other images show members of the River Club board visiting Benton’s studio to check on the progress of the mural. One charming image captures a candid moment of Rita Benton and Myrt Mardikes as they collaborated in the Benton kitchen making chicken kapama for their husbands.
