Art Subject: Tree
Plunge
Located in Hudson, NY
Photographed entirely in the ethereal lakeside environs of the Adirondacks, Lynda Churilla's latest exhibition synthesizes the aesthetics of strength and softness. Central to this aesthetic theme is the portrayal of Churilla's husband and muse John, who she describes as a source of inspiration. Standing nude and silhouetted in the foreground, the powerful form of John's body is rendered stoic and subdued by multiple mist‐wreathed aquatic expanses and looming woodland scenes. Whether standing in a state of intent tranquility in the foreground of a forest, or captured mid‐action during diving or archery, John imparts a sense of security through his physique and determined mien. Also conveyed is an air of intrigue stemming from his body, which is often concealed by shadow or wreathed in haze. Examples of masterful composition, Churilla's black‐and‐white images fully demonstrate the pacifying effect of nature on the male figure. The invitational piece, Silence represents Churilla's overall vision for this exhibition, featuring John facing away from the camera while standing in the shallows in a mist covered lake. Staring into the distance with his body in graceful repose, he appears lost in and enveloped by his surroundings, eliciting the romantic feeling of limitlessness and a sense of peace. The style in which Churilla captures John is reminiscent of the figurative nudes produced by photographers like Jock Sturges or Sally Mann. This exhibition is composed of eleven large-format pieces which range from 30" x 40" to 60" x 40". Eight photographs centered on John are accompanied by three abstract landscape pieces that capture the Adirondacks in all its otherworldly beauty. In one of these, White Mist, one stumbles into a world of beautifully muted color tones, in which a nearly impenetrable mist surrounds a lake. This photograph serves to highlight stillness of water, which Churilla herself regards as healing and thought inducing. Churilla first gained her appreciation of the Adirondacks while working as an assistant to the legendary photographer Bruce Weber in his 1990 series Bear Pond. Since studying as Weber's protégé for nearly a decade, Churilla's own work has been acclaimed by such publications as American Photo and Harper's Bazaar, in which she has been lauded as a promising female photographer. She has photographed numerous celebrities, such as Cameron Diaz, Jewel, Olivier Martinez, Coldplay, Pet Shop Boys...

This unique object features a wet plate collodion print framed in a handmade wooden frame lined with gold leaf. Frame measures 12 by 9 inches. Cecilia Montalvo & Charlie McCullers are a collaborative team. Characterized by the dynamic nature of the land-sea interaction, barrier islands are places with many shape narratives, and inversions. A barrier island is ephemeral, an instance of simultaneity, above and below what we call the surface. Mangroves straddle these mirror worlds, walking on water, making something out of nothing. Light rushes through every keyhole and seam in palm forest...

Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...

Located in Hudson, NY
Price for UNFRAMED item The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018 Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.” Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series. Water, Black and White, Forest, 1930's inspired, vintage, parasol, Southampton, NY, Hamptons...

The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. Ted Adams’ first solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery juxtaposes surrealism with the documentary art form. What differentiates Mr. Adams’ work from traditional photojournalism is his keen eye for capturing the irony in the events that unfold before our eyes. It is the found objects in everyday life to which Adams is most attuned. He creates a subtle mood and visual mystery that conveys meaning not only from the image itself but also through imagining what exists just beyond the frame. "I see photography as a way of cropping the world—selectively taking things out of context—which often results in stripping the meaning out of the original subject matter, or at least making the image open to interpretation. It’s the opposite of traditional photojournalism whose intention is to create ‘narrative’ and context rather than discard them." While he has exhibited artistic photography in a variety of genres, in the past five years he turned his artistic eye inward to reflect a more autobiographical tone. While some people compare his work to that of Robert Frank, Adams finds himself more and more influenced by Larry Clark whose career was built on pictures drawn from his own life and drug-addled friends rather than a specific documentary mission. The unique presentation of this collection of twenty-three silver gelatin prints enhances the voyeuristic sensibility of Mr. Adams’ work. Each photograph is jewel box in size, measuring 4" x 6" to invite the viewer in to make an intimate appraisal. The craftsmanship of the wide, dark wood frames hearkens back to late 19th-century Shaker design—yet the aesthetic is boldly contemporary, providing a strong backdrop to draw the viewer’s gaze directly to the subject matter. This artisanship extends to the printing where Adams exhibits his skills in traditional darkroom processes. He shoots mostly with Leica and Nikon 35mm film cameras...

Mom and Baby, Krugar Park South Africa
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition 3 of 25 After 30 years on West 11th Street, The Robin Rice Gallery celebrates its first ever exhibition for Robin Rice. For decades, Robin has exhibited a wide variety of photographers at the gallery but never her own work. As the show’s title denotes, “It’s About Time.” The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibit runs through March 17, 2019. While her photography spans five decades and multiple continents, Rice maintains a cohesive, candid voice that carries throughout all of her work. Observing the world around her in a cinematic way, she possesses an uncanny ability to recognize and capture moments of beauty and the spontaneity of the human spirit. By evoking a wonderstruck sensibility, Rice expresses a deep-rooted love for both people and landscapes using her distinct bohemian style. In this salon-style retrospective, Rice uses an “old school” approach and shoots with her Nikon on Tri-X film. When creating her art, she insists, “the camera has a mind of its own.” The scenes captured in her photography are unedited and thus born purely from the magic of the in-camera composition. In the invitational image, “Tree Farm, Long Lane, East Hampton, NY”, 1999, a naked woman wearing nothing but a large straw hat is captured from behind, centered between a long line of trees on either side, as she bikes down the lane. In another image, “Bubbles, Piazza Rondanini, Roma”, 1995, friends linger before a vine-covered building, extending their arms up in joyful wonder, catching bubbles descending from above. Receiving her first camera at the age of 11, she has since been an avid fine art photographer. After moving from Philadelphia to New York in 1976, Rice was immediately swept up in the electrifying, fast-paced art world of the city. In 1977, Discoworld Magazine hired her to photograph the opening night of Studio 54. After enjoying 23 years of success as a commercial photographer, she shifted her career to become a gallerist, opening The Robin Rice Gallery in 1990. Curating 175 shows, Robin developed her own “school” of artists, cultivating a keen eye for curating and in doing so enriching the aesthetic of her own fine art photography. Despite devoting much of her energy to the gallery, Rice has never stopped creating her own art, and has exhibited in several galleries nationally and abroad. Influenced by photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who curated the art of others and exhibited his own work, Rice is ready to showcase her photography on her own turf. In her spare time, Robin has recently taken up DJing: you can often find DJ Redshoes spinning vinyl at her loft in Beacon. Safari, Kruger Park...

"Foxtor", Dartmoor, UK, 2010

Listing is for FRAMED print. Edition of 1. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. Patricia Heal's 8th show at the Robin Rice Gallery marks a departure from her previous figurative work with a visual essay celebrating the wild ponies of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. The dedicated exhibit reflects Patricia's life-long love affair with the area and its inhabitants—the semi-feral native ponies that have roamed the moors for centuries. The work represents a conscious shift to provide a respite from the modern world and create a sense that one has stumbled upon a treasured possession. With a nod to Peter Beard and Deborah Turbeville, each photograph, whether from negative or digital, is printed on canvas that has been distressed to take on a worn, slightly damaged texture and then stitched to another piece of canvas with horsehair. Through tearing, staining with archival inks, charcoal and graphite, the canvasses take on a look and feel of a valued relic from the past only now rediscovered by the viewer. There will be no editions as they are truly one-of-a-kind. Born and raised in the region, Dartmoor was an important part of Patricia's childhood experience. The magical ponies and misty, granite flecked moorlands always held a special place in her imagination. She has recently been inspired by the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT), whose mission it is to save the indigenous pony from extinction. It is estimated now that there are as few as 1500 ponies kept on the moors. In the invitational image, Lord Byron “—Indigenous Dartmoor Pony”, we see a close-up of a pony against a distressed canvas background that takes on the elegant look and feel of tapestry, framing the pony's powerful profile and highlighting its mane. In another image, “Sherberton Crossroads”, a dappled grey pony gallops across the terrain. The pony's elongated shape blends perfectly with the horizon, a mix of sparse, flat rock and low brownish green vegetation that gives way to a blue expanse of sky. It's a seamless integration of the statuesque horse and nature. The 30 individual canvases of different shapes and sizes are presented in collage formation on one wall. Heal sees the series as one large complete work. On the facing wall, Heal's video installation of the ponies roaming wild in their environment adds yet another layer to the show. It is surrounded by text of a poem by Emily Bronte and an article about Dartmoor written by Andrew Price. The exhibit will also be shown in London next year, further raising awareness of these wild ponies who embody freedom and strength despite their rare breed status. Steven Spielberg's “Warhorse” was shot in Dartmoor last year and will be released later this fall. He says of the area: “I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I did while filming “Warhorse” on Dartmoor.” —Steven Spielberg, Enjoy Dartmoor Magazine.
