Volcano National Park, Ruanda 2020 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard: 48 x 51 inches Large: 67 x 71 inches All prints are on 315gsm Hahnemühle photo rag Baryta paper and varnished after processing to give both endurance and sheen. Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Price includes David Yarrow's custom black ash frame, white archival matting and protective UV acrylic. For unframed, $1,500 will be deducted from the price. David Yarrow has built an unrivaled reputation for capturing the beauty of the planet’s remote landscapes, cultures and endangered animals. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "If someone else had taken this immersive photograph and asked me which country it had been captured in, Rwanda would be my immediate response. There are mountain gorillas in Uganda and DRC and head on encounters can happen anywhere, but it would take a great deal of persuasion and empirical evidence for me not to regard Rwanda as the odds on favourite location. The number of accessible silverbacks is just so much higher and in my experience the vegetation offers more opportunities for encounters in clearer areas. Cigar shots like this are improbable but not impossible. That is why we keep returning. Most treks are failures for us as we set the bar high, but once in a while it all comes together. Gorilla photography is tough - encounters are intense and normally occur in dense jungle with dappled light and little sense of place. The camera...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "The Chief Park Warden of Volcanoes National Park - Prosper Unwingeli - likes this photograph a great deal, which I guess is instructive in that he has seen it all, both in the park itself and also through the lenses of those that make the trek up the mountain. The reason it appeals to him is that the image is in part a nod to the high number of babies born every year - 24 in the last year alone, which is proof of the outstanding conservation story in the Rwandan National Park. But more importantly, he told me that it is rare to see the lead silverback and one of the young members of the troop chilling together alone...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Dian Fossey - the Californian zoologist who became the world’s leading authority on the mountain gorilla - left a formidable legacy when she was tragically murdered in 1985. Her resting place, high up in the rain forest, is visited regularly by those that want to pay homage to her life. Fossey’s famous book ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ chronicled her research and conservation work that helped to reduce the downward population trend in mountain gorillas, ultimately saving them from extinction. Her grave is a two and a half hour walk straight uphill from the little mountain village of Bisate on the edge of the National Park and over the years a well-trodden path has taken shape in what is otherwise a dense and fairly impenetrable rainforest. In all my times trekking through the forest in search of gorillas, I have never had the fortune to be able to use this path to access the gorillas - as quite simply it was too far from the location of any particular troop to be of use. But on this occasion during Covid 19 we were working tightly with the rangers - who advised us that the Umubano Group were near the Fossey trail. It certainly helped the trek to use the path, but far better than that, it transpired that a large Silverback from the Umubano Group - Bunyenyeri, 21 years old - was coming down the...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This is an unusual shot for me, but it “hits the spot” and, overtime, I have grown fonder and fonder of it. It’s actually a punchy photograph. It’s not typical of my work because I tend to avoid the harshness of a midday sun and secondly, I was working from inside my vehicle which, in Amboseli, is rare. I tend to be out and about. The key factor in the image, however, was more prescriptive and truer to form. I was exceedingly close and this enabled me to use a portrait rather than a telephoto lens. To be given that choice, is the biggest luxury for a photographer. This a huge and magnificent elephant who had enjoyed a morning mud bath. The mud dries quickly as the day heats up and the only evidence of his indulgence lay just under his right eye. From that point on, we always called him the pirate...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Vayetse is probably the most handsome of Kevin Richardson’s lions and certainly the most famous. This image, taken in a flooded grassland after summer rains, is the strongest I have taken of him for a few years. The key was to be low to the lion, close to the lion and yet safe. This mandate would not therefore have been for everyone. Lying in water a foot deep inside a metal cage in an African swamp is not for the precious, but it was my only option. My legs itched for days after, but I guess that was a small price to pay for this image. It is important in these types of portraits for the eye contact of the lion to be emphatic. If the lion is not looking at me, the power of the image is materially reduced. It will be his eyes that tell us that Vayetse is focused, alert and on the hunt. That “Basic...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken. It can be a slog up the mountain in the rainy season and even when you encounter a silverback, so many variables that are beyond anyone’s control have to work in the favour of the artist. Firstly, I prefer cloud cover, as a strong sun scattering shafts of intense light through the canopy of the rainforest is not a good bedfellow for portraiture. Secondly, I always prefer some degree of room to work with and 50% of my trips up that hill have not given me that opportunity - the vegetation is just too dense - on the ground and above. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. Thirdly, the silverback has to play ball - and that is not easy - in my experience the earlier the encounter in the day, the greater the opportunity of meeting an alert and compliant gorilla. This is the son of Kwitonda - a famous silverback who passed away recently and it is this son who is now the Governor...
