ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marco studied fine art at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. New York Times photography critic Gene Thornton called Marco “a Minimalist, whose images are sensual, whimsical, often surreal, always strong, and deceptively simple.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Phil Marco on a number of my films. Phil is a man of extraordinary talents. It seems that his passion is to take an everyday object or event, and show it in an entirely new and exciting way.”

Phil’s work is represented in MOMA, The Museum of the Moving Image,
and The George Eastman Museum of Photography.
His first photographs were studies for his paintings, before he launched a career in print advertising. He eventually became a Director / DP for film and television for a vast base of national and international clients with his wife Patricia as Partner and Producer. In the 1980’s and 90’s Phil was the go to person for Special Effects in Television and Cinema, also best known for his graphic conceptual still lives, and his consummate mastery of lighting, and design. Peter Essick is a photographer, author and drone pilot who specializes in nature and environmental themes. His latest series, "Memorial Drive," documents the thoroughfare that stretches between the Georgia State Capitol and the Confederate monument at Stone Mountain. Originally known as East Fair Street, Memorial Drive was one of the first roads in Atlanta, and connected the downtown commercial districts to the residential neighborhoods of East Lake and Kirkwood. In 1930, it was expanded all the way to Memorial Hall in Stone Mountain Park with the use of convict labor. The now 15-mile-long thoroughfare took on a new symbolic meaning to physically connect the State Capitol with the Confederate monument at Stone Mountain. According to an article in The Atlanta Constitution on February 2, 1930, Memorial Drive was “another step in the effort of Atlanta and Georgia to honor the memory of the heroes of the confederacy.”
In the years since, Memorial Drive has acquired even more history. The street passes through communities of a wide diversity of people. These neighborhoods have seen cycles of development, economic decline, redevelopment and in some recent cases complete gentrification. People from all over the world as well as those from just across town have come to live and work on or near Memorial Drive. The street’s story is complex and of interest not only to developers and realtors, but also urban planners, sociologists, community activists, business owners, residents and even artists. Peter used a drone to take many of the photographs in the series, using a survey approach, he hopes to peak a viewers’ interest with the wide array of subjects.

Starting in 1970, John traveled to South Africa capturing images of the people and social divide of Aparteid. His iconic Subway series shot between the mid 1970’s and 1982 in New York City is part of the permanent collection of The New York Historical Society and Hoboken Historical Museum. In 2010, John Conn spent 45 days in Antarctica and Patagonia, traveling and hiking to capture the land and seascapes. He spent over 20 days journeying over 3,200 nautical miles in Antarctica before heading to Patagonia for the second part of his expedition. « J’ai compté : je suis allé 17 fois aux USA. « Seventeen trips ». Mes référents "culturels" et "politiques" ont évolué. D’autres images sont venus se superposer à celles qui remplissaient mon imaginaire. Mais tous s’est passé comme je le pressentais. Que reste-t- il à photographier aux USA ? Rien ? Ce n’était pas possible… J’ai failli ranger mes boîtiers. Et puis, un soir, j’ai écouté au piano une énième version des « Variations Goldberg » de Jean Sebastien Bach interprétés par un jeune pianiste talentueux. Après tant d’autres, et certains « monstres sacrés », il osait affronter cette partition… Le parallèle s’imposait : et si le territoire américain était justement nos « Variations Goldberg » à nous les photographes du réel, de la société et de la politique ? Et si justement il fallait un jour en passer par là ? Comme une nécessité d’aller se frotter à ce « réel imaginaire ». Pour ensuite aller sinon plus loin, du moins ailleurs.
