Alphonse Mucha
Original Vintage Salon des Cent 1896 Poster by Alphonse Mucha

1896

About the Item

Salon des Cent was an art exhibition in Paris that sold color posters, prints and reproductions of artwork to the general public at reasonable prices. It was established in 1894 by Léon Deschamps, founder of La Plume ("The Pen"), an important magazine of the day. The salon held exhibitions until 1900, and many of the posters advertising Salon des Cent exhibitions have themselves become collectors' items. This image was created for the Salon des Cent in 1896 by Alphonse Mucha in his romantic style with the details to find the exhibition included in the text on the lower part of the poster. Czech artist Alphons Mucha (1860-1939) liked drawing when he was a child, and at a young age started working as a theatrical scenery painter. In 1879, Mucha moved to Vienna to pursue this line of work, and soon after was sponsored to study at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. The artist moved to Paris in 1887 to continue his studies at Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi. He soon became popular in the French capital for his paintings, illustrations and designs for jewelry and wallpapers, among others. His style became known as Art Nouveau, French for “New Art”. Mucha usually depicted beautiful women surrounded by flowers and Neoclassical inspired robes. Mucha created posters for many brands, for LU he also designed posters, wrappers and other printed objects. Dutch Hearts
By Jim Dine
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Jim Dine was one of the key artists who defined American Pop Art in the 1960s. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine appropriated quintessential American images and icons. He used ubiquitous and familiar forms, like tools, food, and stylized clothing, as the basis for bold and colorful compositions inspired by Dada assemblage, Abstract Expressionism, and collage techniques. The "Heart" is the most celebrated icon in Dine's oeuvre. He uses its motif to explore pattern, color, and texture across mediums. This classic and iconic example of Jim Dine's hearts from his most sought-after period. Four coral hearts, adorned with flecks of blood orange, hover in the center of the work. The background features tactile grapefruit splotches that dance across the sheet to reveal and accentuate stretches of negative space. The result is a striking illusion of depth that simultaneously camouflages the hearts and accelerates them to the foreground of the work. Questions about this piece?
