About

From the Piranesi's series “Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi pubblicati l’anno MDCCLXXIIX” (1778). Antiche urne cinerarie e lampade" is an artist proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, large margins, representing antique marble cinerary urns - “found into antique graves in Siena”- and lamps with lower printed note. This etching is dedicated “To Sir. Francesco Dickins, English Cavaliere and patron of fine arts, as a mark of profound respect, Cavaliere Gio. Batta Piranesi D.D.D.“. Excellent condition, despite a browned paper and some foxing marks on margins. Signed on plate “Cavalier Piranesi F.” on the lower left. Image Dimensions : 41 x 65 cm Undoubtedly Piranesi was one of the most important engravers in 18th century even if he was well-known as an architect and an archaeologist: the greatest engraver in the period from Rembrandt a Goya.
