From the Piranesi's series “Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi pubblicati l’anno MDCCLXXIIX” (1778). Antiche urne cinerarie e lampade" is an artist proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, large margins, representing antique marble cinerary urns - “found into antique graves in Siena”- and lamps with lower printed note. This etching is dedicated “To Sir. Francesco Dickins, English Cavaliere and patron of fine arts, as a mark of profound respect, Cavaliere Gio. Batta Piranesi D.D.D.“. Excellent condition, despite a browned paper and some foxing marks on margins. Signed on plate “Cavalier Piranesi F.” on the lower left.

Undoubtedly Piranesi was one of the most important engravers in 18th century even if he was well-known as an architect and an archaeologist: the greatest engraver in the period from Rembrandt a Goya. The generations after him have continued to imagine the Ancient Rome as the artist has portrayed his magnificent in "Vedute".
