Uncommon limited edition vintage Jasper Johns poster from 1968. A bright impression, rarely seen in such good condition.
Provenance: Estate of pioneering curator and gallerist, Alice Denney, Denny was the founder of the Washington Project for the Arts and she served as the assistant director of the Washington Gallery of Modern Art.
This poster was designed by Jasper Johns for the legendary American dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham and his company. Founded in 1953 with composer John Cage (who would later become his life partner), the Merce Cunningham Dance Company quickly became known for its avant-garde and experimental performances that challenged conventional notions of dance. A friend of the dancer since the 1950s, Johns was his company’s artistic advisor from 1967 to 1980. After Cunningham’s death, he described him as "his favorite artist in any field" and noted the enduring impact his relationship with Cage had on his own partnership with artist Robert Rauschenberg. This poster reproduces Johns’s influential Target With Four Faces (1955), one of his earliest paintings depicting his most famous subject.

Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker born on May 15, 1930. He eventually became one of America's best known post–Abstract Expressionists and Minimalists.
Johns's name is most often associated with pictorial images of flags and numbers and Pop art subjects that he depicted in Minimalist style with an emphasis on linearity, repetition and symmetry. He completed his first flag painting in 1955, alphabet subjects in 1956, sculpture in 1958 and lithographs in 1960.

Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993.
