Jean Cocteau
Writer, artist and film director Jean Cocteau was one of the most influential creative figures in the Parisian avant-garde between the two World Wars.
“The poet never asks for admiration; he wants to be believed.”
—Jean Cocteau
Synopsis
Jean Cocteau was born on July 5, 1889, in Maisons-Laffitte, France. He spent most of his life in Paris, where he became part of the artistic avant-garde and was known for his variety of accomplishments. Over a 50-year career, he wrote poetry, novels and plays; created illustrations, paintings and other art objects; and directed influential films, including The Beauty and the Beast and Orpheus. He died on October 11, 1963.
Early Life and Literary Debut
Jean Cocteau was born on July 5, 1889, in Maisons-Laffitte, France, a village 12 miles outside Paris, to Georges and Eugénie (née) Lecomte Cocteau. He and his two older siblings were brought up in comfortable household in Paris, where they were introduced to the arts by their parents. Their father, a lawyer and amateur artist, committed suicide in 1898.
After his father's death, Cocteau was raised by his mother and his maternal grandfather. He attended school at the Lycée de Condorcet in Paris and he showed an early talent for writing. When he was just 18, his poetry was read aloud in performance arranged by the well-known actor Edouard de Max, and he became the toast of literary Paris. His first book of poems, La Lampe d'Aladin (Aladdin's Lamp), was published a year later, in 1909.
Cocteau and the Parisian Avant-Garde
In the 1910s, Cocteau formed friendships with many prominent members of the Parisian avant-garde, including writer Guillaume Apollinaire and artists Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. He was so impressed by seeing the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky perform with the Ballets Russes that he met the company's founder, Sergei Diaghilev, and asked to work with him. Cocteau designed posters for the Ballets Russe, and in 1917 he was one of the collaborators on the ballet Parade: Cocteau wrote the story, Erik Satie composed the music, Léonide Massine choreographed the dance and Picasso designed the set and costumes.
Cocteau's activities of the 1920s were remarkably varied. He composed opera libretti for several composers. He published collections of poetry and illustrations as well as a novel inspired by his experiences during World War I. He staged a ballet called Le Boeuf Sur le Toit (The Ox on the Roof) and directed modern adaptations of several classic dramas. He promoted the work of young writer Raymond Radiguet...

MEL RAMOS
Señorita Rio, from the Deluxe signed edition of 1 Cent Life (Artists & Collaborators), 1963
Color lithograph on wove paper
Hand signed and dated on the lower right front; print numbered on the colophon page a copy of which is affixed to the back of the frame (see photo)
Edition 85/100
Published by E.W. Kornfeld, Germany, Written by Walasse Ting, Edited by Sam Francis
Framed: Elegantly floated and framed in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass
Provenance: Acquired from original, complete 1 Cent Life Portfolio, # 85/100 (Artists & Collaborators) from the Estate and Collection of Robert Indiana
This original lithograph, splayed across two pages, is from the Deluxe edition of the legendary 1 Cent Life Portfolio, one of the most documented and celebrated artistic collaborations of the 1960s. Chinese American artist and writer Walasse Ting, in collaboration with Sam Francis, assembled a group of the most significant Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists in America, including Pop Artist Mel Ramos, along with the European COBRA artist to create the definitive artistic portfolio, with text by Walasse Ting. The Deluxe edition, which features hand signed prints was published in a limited edition of only 100. This is one of them. Of the 100, editions numbered 60-100, or 40 portfolios, were reserved exclusively for Artists & Collaborators. This hand signed Mel Ramos lithograph is from the portfolio numbered 85 (Artists & Collaborators), which was acquired from the Estate and Collection of Robert Indiana, one of the artists who contribute to the 1 Cent Life portfolio. The racy text to the right of the print -- an anti-Corporate American screed, was written by Walasse Ting.
It is elegantly floated and framed in. amuseum frame with UV plexiglass.
Signed examples of this portfolio with such superb provenance rarely appear on the marketplace. This is a true collectors item, from the most desirable and influential era in Pop Art history.
Mel Ramos became famous for his ironic portraits of pin ups and how they are used in American advertising. (see detailed biography below). The poem called America to the right of the lithograph, entitled "America" was written by Chinese born artist Walasse Ting, and matches the image perfectly, as it's also a commentary on American commercial culture. The poem begins:
Brain made by IBM & FBI
stomach supported by A & P
and Horn & Hardart
love supported by Time & Life
tongue supported by
American Telephone & Telegraph
soul made by 7up
skin start with Max Factor
heart red as U.S. Steel

More about the Signed (Deluxe) Edition of 1 Cent Life portfolio
In 1962, the Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting shared his dream project with painter Sam Francis: to create an anthology of his poetry illustrated by leading artists of their time. Over the next two years, Ting and Francis recruited leading Abstract Expressionists and Pop artists—Andy Warhol, Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg...

"Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco" Multi Layer Screen Print on Paper - Signed
Rare and bold Screen Print (Silk Screen) of Fisherman's Wharf 1957 by Gordon Cope (American, 1906-1999). Several boats are docked at Fisherman's Wharf, with buildings directly behind them. In the distance, the hills of San Francisco can be seen meeting a pale blue sky. Of particular note is the skillful representation of the reflections of the boats in the water, and the clever use of grey paper as negative space.
Numbered and titled in pencil in the lower left corner "22/100 Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco"
Hand signed and dated in pencil in the lower right corner "Gordon Cope 1957"
Titled, signed, and dated "in plate"
Presented in a silver colored frame with a double mat.
Frame size: 22.5"H x 27"W
Image size: 15"H x 20"W
Gordon N. Cope (American, 1906-1999) was an educator and painter. Trained in Utah and France, he exhibited his landscape paintings and portraits in the United States and Europe, and he believed music was related to painting.
Cope was born on May 14, 1906, in Salt Lake City. He was trained by Utahn artists LeConte Stewart and Lawrence Squires, and at the Académie Julian in Paris, France in 1928. He also studied singing at the Opéra-Comique.
Cope taught art at Latter-day Saints University, and he served as the chair of its Department of Art in 1930–1931. He taught at the Mountain School of Art from 1932 to 1938, and he was the director of the Art Barn School in Salt Lake City in 1939–1941. Cope painted Utahn landscapes as well as a portrait of Henry H. Blood, who served as the seventh governor of Utah from 1933 to 1941. Cope exhibited his work in the United States and Europe. According to the Deseret News, Cope "felt that music and painting are closely interrelated, and that the study of one form may be used to complement the appreciation and understanding of the other."
Cope died on June 10, 1999, in San Francisco, California.
Gordon Nicholson Cope studied with well-known Utah artists A.B. Wright and LeConte Stewart, and became recognized as a major Utah artist of the Great Depression. Cope was born in Salt Lake City in 1906 and spent much of his life in Utah.
Cope gained much of his artistic training from diverse environments and influences. Following his training with the previously mentioned artists, Cope spent the next year, 1924, working with Lawrence Squires in Arizona. To expand his knowledge and training, Cope traveled to Europe, where he studied the "old masters" such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. From 1924 to 1928, Cope studied in England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, and worked for a year at the Acadamie Julian, where many early Utah artists...

Westermann and Kapsalis Sculpture at Four Fourteen Art Center Poster
By HC Westermann
Located in New York, NY
H.C. Westermann, Thomas Kapsalis
Rare artist designed early poster: Westermann and Kapsalis Sculpture at Four Fourteen Art Center and Gallery Chicago, 1957
Historic offset lithograph poster designed by both artists
Not signed
17 × 22 inches
Unframed
This extremely rare poster on handmade paper was published for the Tom Kapsalis/H.C. Westermann sculpture exhibition at 414 Art Workshop and Gallery, Chicago Momentum, 1020 Art Center, Chicago in December 1957. The poster was hand designed by both artists, with each one designing his respective half for a cohesive whole, for an exhibition at a small, now defunct regional art center in the late fifties -- so it's not unreasonable to believe that there just aren't too many of these out there anymore. A must have for anyone seriously involved in the careers and legacies of each or both of these sculptors.
About H.C. Westermann:
American artist Horace Clifford Westermann (Los Angeles, 1922 – Danbury, 1981) assembled a distinctive and singular body of sculptures. His works were predominantly made from wood through his masterly command of carpentry and cabinetmaking, yet he also used other techniques and materials such as metal, glass and enamelling with incredible precision. Without adhering to one particular style, Westermann was a maker of objects, of separate pieces: his sculptures, laden with meaning, often irony, result from the processing of experience, coalescing to yield specific fragments of reality.
It is the course of these fragments that the retrospective presented by the Museo Reina Sofía follows. A concern with going back to shelter would soon emerge, be it in the home or the body —and blighted by the threat of confinement and death. Also, stubborn or helpless figures would recur through Westermann’s oeuvre. The motif of the “death ship” runs right through the breadth of his production as well, pointing, on one side, to continued wandering and latent abandonment and, on the other, to a determined pursue of refuge which seems to hold firm across his work.
At the turning point of the 1960s, Westermann’s sculptures drew from mass culture, and made part of several exhibitions of the new realisms, when the “cold” tag of Pop art had not yet fully taken shape. The exhibition presents this output and the “specificity” of Westermann’s objects, which interested Donald Judd in 1963. In later pieces his work increasingly deals with the absurd, either through playfulness with language, in the confusion between work and instrument, or with references to the impermanent
Besides the sculptures, the show displays Westermann’s paintings, letter-drawings —in his correspondence with other artists, critics and friends— and series of prints, in which he applied vibrant colours to address themes such as an escapist, while critical depiction of the American scene; catastrophe, and fragility.
A graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954, Horace Clifford Westermann produced most of his work from a small town in Connecticut, where he settled in 1961. He regularly exhibited his work in New York, and occasionally in Chicago and on the West Coast.

About Tom Kapsalis:
One of Chicago’s great abstractionists, painter Thomas H. Kapsalis (born 1922) has been an important artist and educator since the late ’40s, when he graduated from the School of the Art Institute. A prisoner of war in Germany, captured during the Battle of the Bulge, Kapsalis returned to continue his pursuit of art-making, eventually returning to Germany in the early ’50s on a Fullbright-Hays Fellowship to study with Willi Baumeister. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute since 1954, and his work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows. Among the honors bestowed upon Kapsalis are Huntington Harford Foundation Grants (1956, 1959); Robert Rice Jenkins Prize, Chicago & Vicinity Exhibition, Art Institute of Chicago (1956); Pauline Palmer Prize, Chicago & Vicinity Exhibition, AIC (1960); Mr. & Mrs. Julie F. Brower Prize, Chicago & Vicinity Exhibition, AIC (1969).
