Camberwell College of Art, MA Printmaking (1990-92), Camberwell College of Art, BA Hons Fine Art (1987-90), University of Manchester, BA Hons Art History (1982-85).
Hammick's first solo show was at Eton College in 1992, and was followed by shows at Redfern Gallery, Salisbury Museum and Brighton Museum, as well as shows in Paris, France, and regularly across Canada,
The Artist had a three-month residency at The Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador (AGNL), now 'The Rooms', during which he visited the national parks of Terra Nova and Gross Morn, as well as many of the remote costal areas along the eastern shore. Coupled with his time spent in the South Pacific, Hammick can be seen as a lover of grand and remote coastal landscapes. His art deals not only with the dramatic terrain but the frontier mentality of lives imposing civilisation on to wilderness.
Having always been a keen printmaker, Hammick is currently the Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking at the University of Brighton.
Hammick's work is included in many public and private collections, including that of Deutsche Bank. A monograph on Hammick was published in 2015 by Lund Humphries.
"Colour and space dominate. He favours velvety midnight blues, flamingo pinks, and cool greens and greys, a palette not dissimilar to that of the Scottish artist Craigie Aitchison. In this environment of lakes and forests, of extreme weather, the landscape still has power to dominate the little, isolated homesteads that nestle in the crook of hills or by vast lakes. These lyrical works explore man's place within the scheme of things." 'The Independent', 2005

From a 1947 gouache and chalk original (53.3 x 48.2 cm), the motif also worked into 'Boy and Birdcage', 1947-48, an oil painting. Scott was teaching at Corsham Court with Clifford and Rosemary Ellis, who had been chosen. The birdcage was originally explored in his 1946 painting 'Robert with Birdcage'. Produced for the first series of Lyons prints, by sixteen artists, it was the most avant-garde image chosen for the standardised sizes 'This was distinguishable as from the other lithographs because it was rendered in a bold artistic style of simple shapes and blocks of flat colour.' 'Tea and a Slice of Art', Charlie Batchelor, Towner Art Gallery, 2007. The lithographs were bought early on by institutions including the V&A, National Galleries of Scotland and British Council, as well as being available in New York with Rudolf...

Balinese Mother and Child

About the artist:
Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano was born in San-Fele, Italy on Oct. 14, 1889. At age three Bufano's family brought him to NYC where he spent his childhood and was educated by private tutors. He studied at the ASL in NYC from 1913-15, the pupil of James L. Fraser, Herbert Adams, and Paul Manship. He came to San Francisco in 1915 to work on a sculpture for the PPIE. For awhile he worked in the studio of coppersmith Dirk van Erp. He then traveled extensively for four years in France, Italy, India, and China. After returning to San Francisco in 1921, he remained there the rest of his life except for visits to the Orient and Europe. Always a radical, he lost his teaching position at San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 because he was too modern for the conservative faculty. He later taught at UC Berkeley and the CCAC (1964-65). Henry Miller wrote of him, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence." His work, simple in style and monumental in scale, includes smoothly rounded animals in granite and icons sheathed in stainless steel. Only five feet tall, Bufano was a controversial, free spirit until his death in San Francisco on Aug. 16, 1970. Member: SFAA; NSS; American Artists Congress. Exh: Whitney Museum (NYC), 1917; Arden Gallery...
