HOMAGE TO DE CHIRICO Signed Lithograph, Surreal Landscape, Archeology, Sandwich
Located in Union City, NJ
HOMAGE TO DE CHIRICO is an original, hand drawn, stone lithograph by the Italian artist Antonio Recalcati (1938-2022) printed in Paris France c. 1973 using hand lithography techniques on archival printmaking paper, 100% acid free. HOMAGE TO DE CHIRICO presents a pop art style, surreal landscape depicting an ancient Roman monument and empty town square with a lone shadowy figure visible in the upper window; a mysterious still life arrangement is set in the foreground featuring a sandwich on a roll and drinking goblet positioned in the center. HOMAGE TO DE CHIRICO is very intriguing and somewhat amusing composition that keeps us guessing. Print size - 20.25 x 28.75 in., unframed, very good condition, vivid colors, pencil signed by Antonio Recalcati, Printer's Proof dedicated "Pour Joseph" In 1973, Paris Recalcati painted a series of pictures titled “The Boheme de Chirico”. It is an unconventional and ironic reading of the great Giorgio de Chirico. The metaphysical monuments in the squares are transformed into physical objects such as a sandwich, macaroni dish, Parma ham, etc. The exhibition at the “Galérie Mathias Fels” in Paris received great success from the critics. The text in the exhibition catalogue is by Alain Jouffroy. President Georges Pompidou, had sent a jeep from Élysée Palace to have some paintings to view. Recalcati took up the theme of "ham" several times, for example in a painting from 1973, "La bohème de Chirico, place d'Italie" or in the work "Jambon de Paris" from 1972. Recalcati often exhibited in the 1970's in Italy, Paris, Caracas, and New York. During this time the 'Ham series' was created. About the artist - Antonio Recalcati (2 May 1938 – 4 December 2022) was an Italian painter and sculptor, born in a working-class family in Bresso, a suburb of Milan. Born in 1938 in Bresso, near Milan, who died on 4 December 2022, Antonio Recalcati was a major artist of the second half of the 20th century. Known first as a painter of the New Figuration in Paris, he was later more closely related to the movement of the Narrative Figuration. Without an artistic background, he was noted in the first half of the 1960s by his "Imprections" (Impronte), paintings made by applying directly to the canvas and in oil his own body or empty clothes (shirts, underpants, body jerseys). This process is then of total originality. It carries an unprecedented expressionist charge, and it becomes enigmatic when combined with abstract shapes or narrative devices (space of the canvas separated into several boxes, such as a page of comics). Exhibited both in Italy; in Paris in the salons and galleries (Gallery Mathias Fels, gallery Claude Levin, Galerie André Schoeller); in Brussels (Fragmy Gallery, Lanzberg Gallery); in New York (Odissey gallery); he participates in historical exhibitions such as: (Paris, 1964); and , During these same years, he befriended poets (Jacques Prévert) and novelists (Dino Buzatti), and he participated – with other artists such as Gilles Aillaud, Eduardo Arroyo, and Jean-Jacques Lebel – in several collective works that had become emblematic of the commitment of a new generation of painters: Grand Tableau...

Les Belles et La Bête I: The Rehearsal
Located in Middletown, NY
Resist ground etching and engraving on Rives heavyweight buff paper, 20 x 36 inches (508 x 914 mm), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 103/160 in pencil, lower margin. Minor mat tone. A rich and finely printed impression of this complex and iconic work by Milton. Framed handsomely under Plexiglas with archival materials in a solid wood frame with silver finish. [Milton 98]. Milton states that in the evolution of his body of graphic work he found himself at point that necessitated the exertion of nerve in his subject matter. He found it imperative for growth to explore whether his compositions had previously been too polite, and through this process he experienced a great burst of artistic and psychic liberation. Milton refers to this awakening as a sort of adolescence, which he felt demanded a natural examination of mysteries of sexual awakening. Les Belles et La Bête...

Windswept Landscape Henry Moore drawing of Scottish landscape for W.H. Auden
Located in New York, NY
One of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist fo¬r the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil. Printed in inky black, this print features a shadowy landscape. Brush sweeps to the left, and the sky is drawn with long horizontal lines. In the bottom half of the composition, the ground looks rocky, perhaps dotted with shrubs. Windswept Landscape displays Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding. The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Windswept Landscape is one of a group of lithographs...

From the estate of Jacob and Aviva Bal Teshuva - authors of books on Christo, collectors, philanthropists and friends of the artist. Provenance Estate of Aviva and Jacob Bal-Teshuva ABOUT THE PONT NEUF WRAPPED PROJECT: On September 22, 1985, a group of 300 professional workers completed the temporary work of art The Pont Neuf Wrapped. They had deployed 450,000 square feet (41,800 square meters) of woven polyamide fabric, silky in appearance and golden sandstone in color, covering: The sides and vaults of the twelve arches, without hindering river traffic. The parapets down to the ground. The sidewalks and curbs (pedestrians walked on the fabric). All the street lamps on both sides of the bridge. The vertical part of the embankment of the western tip of the Île de la Cité. The Esplanade of the Vert-Galant. The fabric was restrained by 8 miles (13 kilometers) of rope and secured by 12.1 tons of steel chains encircling the base of each tower, 3.3 feet (1 meter) underwater. The Charpentiers de Paris headed by Gérard Moulin, with French sub-contractors, were assisted by the USA engineers who had worked on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's previous projects, under the direction of Theodore Dougherty: Vahé Aprahamian, August L. Huber, James Fuller, John Thomson and Dimiter Zagoroff. Johannes Schaub, the project's director had submitted the work method and detailed plans and received approval for the project from the authorities of the City of Paris, the Department of the Seine and the State. 600 monitors, in crews of 40, led by Simon Chaput...

“Herald Square at Lunch Time”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original screen print which would be considered a silkscreen or serigraph of a birds eye view of Herald Square in New York City at lunch time by the contemporary American artist, Jacqueline Fogel. Edition 3/15. Signed in lower right margin by the artist. Executed in 1988. Condition is excellent. Currently unframed. Professionally matted. Overall matted measurements are 14 by 11 inches. Framing options are available. Provenance: A Venice, Florida collector. This park was named for the newspaper that was once published directly to its north. The City of New York acquired the area in 1846 as part of the opening of Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway). By the early 20th century, many printers and publishers had located in the area. The New York Herald, founded by James Gordon Bennett in 1835, was best known for its sensational coverage of scandal and crime, and for its enormous circulation. Herald Square's centerpiece monument to Bennett and his son houses a sculpture and clock that formerly topped the Herald building. The bronze figures include Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and invention, and two bell-ringing blacksmiths. The clock and figures were installed on the monument in 1940, and blacksmiths "Stuff and Guff" or "Gog and Magog" have chimed the hours Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Brooklyn, as a child she showed a great interest in drawing. She attended the Philadelphia School of Art and maintained a career as an artist throughout her life. Impressed by the native American art represented in Kachina dolls, she developed a personal style in her 20s that always incorporated bright colors. Her work ranged from land and cityscape watercolors to small to life-size polychrome sculptures made almost entirely from discarded ornate furniture parts and other found or collected objects. In 2000, she was given the opportunity to create cow sculptures for the New York Cow Parade, and in 2002 she painted sculptures for the Rescue Dog book honoring the working dogs from Sept. 11, 2001. In 2005, her Big Apple sculpture was displayed outside Trump Tower. She swam regularly in Jamaica Bay and maintained an active and vibrant lifestyle throughout her life, attending many parties, art exhibits and concerts. Fogel's multifaceted planes which should recede far into the distance and give the illusion of depth because of their tonality and color intensity appear, instead, to be on the same plane. Because the depth of field is flattened, the color areas become rather decorative. In addition, the planes on the buildings are charmingly tilted and destorted, contributing to the zaniness and gaiety of these paintings. Fogel has a graceful sense of composition and her placement of shapes is always sound. The paintings, while they seem so effortless and unselfconscious, belie an unobtrusive and playful artistic intelligence. Fogel enjoys dealing with visual paradoxes in a natural, unforced and unselfconscious manner. Shop her watercolor art for sale online. Very collectible when hand signed by Richard Serra! Accompanied by gallery issued Certificate of Guarantee Measurements: Frame: 27.5 x 37.75 x 1 inch Print: 25.5 x 35.75 inches About Richard Serra: Obsession is what it comes down to. It is difficult to think without obsession, and it is impossible to create something without a foundation that is rigorous, incontrovertible, and, in fact, to some degree repetitive. Repetition is the ritual of obsession. Repetition is a way to jumpstart the indecision of beginning. To persevere and to begin over and over again is to continue the obsession with work. Work comes out of work. In order to work you must already be working. —Richard Serra One of the most significant artists of his generation, he has produced large-scale, site-specific sculptures for architectural, urban, and landscape settings spanning the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand. Born in 1938 in San Francisco, Richard Serra lives and works in New York and on the North Fork of Long Island. Serra attended the University of California, Berkeley before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a BA in English literature; he then studied painting at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut completing both a BFA and MFA. He began showing with Leo Castelli in 1968, and his first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Leo Castelli Warehouse the following year. His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Pasadena Art Museum, California, in 1970. Serra’s sculptures and drawings have been celebrated with two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, twenty years apart: Richard Serra/Sculpture (1986) and Richard Serra Sculpture: Forty Years (2007). He has had solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1977–78); Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany (1978); Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany (1978); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1980, 2014, and 2017); Centre Pompidou, Paris (1983–84); Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, Germany (1985); Louisiana Museum, Humlebæk, Denmark (1986); Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Münster, Germany (1987); Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (1987); Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands (1988); Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Netherlands (1990); Kunsthaus Zürich (1990); CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, France (1990); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1992); Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (1992); Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1997); Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, Rio de Janeiro (1997–98); Trajan’s Market, Rome (1999–2000); Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St. Louis (2003); and Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples, Italy (2004). In 2005 The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a series of eight large-scale works, was installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain. For Monumenta 2008, the major site-specific installation Promenade was shown at the Grand Palais, Paris. Three years later the large-scale, site-specific sculpture 7 was permanently installed opposite the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. A major traveling retrospective dedicated to Serra’s drawings was presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Menil Collection, Houston (the organizing venue), from 2011 to 2012. In 2014 the Qatar Museums Authority presented a two-venue retrospective survey of Serra’s work, and East-West/West-East (2014) was permanently installed in the Brouq Nature Reserve, Zekreet, Qatar. In 2017 the Museum Wiesbaden, Germany, presented Richard Serra: Props, Films, Early Works; an overview of Serra’s work in film and video was shown at the Kunstmuseum Basel; and recent drawings were featured at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Serra has participated in numerous major international exhibitions, including Documenta (1972, 1977, 1982, and 1987), and the Biennale di Venezia (1980, 1984, 2001, and 2013), and his work has been included in many Whitney Annuals and Biennials (1968, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1995, and 2006).
