Spanish, 1931-2005

Known for his poetic minimalism and meditative exploration of landscape, Hernández Pijuan translated his painterly language into lithographic form with remarkable restraint and precision. His works from this period are characterized by subtle tonal fields, delicate linear interventions, and a quiet spatial rhythm that evokes cultivated fields and horizon lines. Within the Polígrafa exhibition, his graphic works resonated alongside those of Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, and Wifredo Lam, reinforcing the prominence of Catalan and Spanish artists in late twentieth-century European abstraction. The London presentation underscored Hernández Pijuan’s growing international recognition at the close of the 1970s. Joan Hernández Pijuan was included in the significant exhibition Ediciones Polígrafa at the Redfern Gallery in London, from 4 December 1979 to 31 January 1980. The exhibition presented works by artists collaborating with the distinguished Barcelona-based print publisher Ediciones Polígrafa, emphasizing the role of graphic editions within postwar European modernism. Hernández Pijuan’s participation positioned his refined, contemplative abstraction within an international framework of modernist printmaking.
