André Jacquemin was born in Epinal, France in 1904. While attending art school in Paris he studied under Charles Walter, where he learnt the techniques of etching and practiced by copying the most famous artists and visited all the museums to learn more about the masterpieces of past and present. In 1925, he underwent military service at Fort de Domont outside Paris together with Louis-Joseph Soulas and Edouard Mac-Avoy. Four years later, with a few other up-and-coming artists including Yves Alix, Amédée de la Patellière and Jacques Villon, André Jacquemin founded "la jeune Gravure Contemporaine", a society of Printmakers.
In 1930, he simultaneously received the Foundation Florence Blumenthal prize and an allowance to go on a study trip from Spain to Morocco for 14 months. Back from Morocco, his career developed very rapidly. At the beginning of 1932, he exhibited his work at the Simonson gallery. It was a success: he sold everything he had done in Morocco and Spain. The same year, he was elected as a fellow of the French Society of Painter-Etchers/Engravers (Peintres Graveurs Français). In 1936, he was awarded the national arts prize, given for the first time to an etcher. Ray Smith's aptitude for the surreal is apparent in this portfolio of six drypoint prints, presented in a portfolio case. Each image depicts an intriguing, fantastic landscape populated with chimeric nudes. Each one is carefully printed to appear as if doodled on lined notebook paper with ballpoint pen: Japanese letter paper chine-colle on Kizuki Hosho paper. Translated as "Letters from Japan," Cartas de Japon plays on tropes of an exotic, faraway land. The series of prints perhaps pictures Japan in the imagination of westerners, who for centuries speculated that those from other continents had wildly different bodies and customs. The title may be a reference to iconic Mexican director Carlos Velo's 1973 film Letters from Japan.

This lithograph was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.
Biography:
Sidaner, (7 August 1862 – July 1939), an intimist painter, born to a French family in Port Louis, Mauritius. In 1870 he and his family settled in Dunkirk. Le Sidaner received most of his tutelage from the École des Beaux-Arts under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel but later broke away due to artistic differences. Between 1885 and 1894 Le Sidaner lived the year round at the Etaples art colony and was joined there by his childhood friend Eugène Chigot (1860–1923), who shared his interest in atmospheric light. Later Le Sidaner traveled extensively throughout France. He also visited many cities around the globe, as well as villages throughout Europe. He exhibited at the Salon, the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris and the Goupil Gallery in London, and settled in Gerberoy. Marcel Proust's mention of Le Sidaner's work in his novel In Search of Lost Time confirms its later reputation. In Sodom and Gomorrah...

Reference: Glasgow 209, third state (of 3), Kennedy 216, third state (of 3); Lochnan 231, 4 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches.
A fine impression with very little plate tone, and printed with extraordinary attention to the etching and drypoint details. The printed butterfly, usually only barely visible, is clearly defined in this impression (see detail below). Kennedy mades special note that an impression like this, with the clearly visible butterfly, was in the collection of John H. Wrenn.
