About: This is a Colour Woodcut by Japanese artists Kitagawa Utamaro, published c. 1792–93. A Modern reprint first between 1918 and 1923, this is a later print in the 90s from Japan. This print is considered some of the best representations of Utamaro's work. The first edition of multicolour nishiki-e prints were published c. 1792–93 by Tsutaya Jūzaburō. The print originally included in two Utamaro's print series, Fujin Sogaku Jittai ( The Physiognomies of Women and Fujo Ninso Juppin ( Ten Classes Of women's Physiognomy), this one with the inscription of 婦女人相十品 is from Fujo Ninso Juppin ( Ten Classes Of women's Physiognomy). It's in an Ukiyo-e style as Utamaro was known for, shows a young lady playing a Popen, a popular toy during the early 1790s. Popen was an exotic type of toy, here the young woman from a respectable family could have innocent fun with; she is likely the daughter of a Upper-class merchant family. The young woman wears a furisode type of kimono worn by young unmarried women. It has a design of scattered cherry blossoms over a red-and-white checker pattern. The rebuses in Fujo Ninsō Juppin (Ten Classes Of women's Physiognomy) include a print title which is clearly printed and sealed with on this woodblock print, published in the series-Fujin Sōgaku Jittai.
