Utamaro Kitagawa – active ca. 1753-1806 Woodblock Print title : Awabi Diver with Shell date: Showa era edition size : oban, approx. 9.5 x 14.5 inches Note : Utamaro Ktagawa (1753-1806) was a Japanese print maker and painter, and is considered one of the greatest artists of woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). He is known especially for his masterfully composed studies of women, known as bijin-ga. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. His work reached Europe in the mid-19th century, enjoying particular acclaim in France. He influenced the European Impressionists with his use of partial views, and emphasis on light and shade. Utamaro also made a number of prints depicting ama divers — women divers for shellfish or pearls, that are his most praised and collectible works. Print is unframed
