Paul Delvaux was a Belgian painter noted for his dream-like scenes of women, classical architecture, trains and train stations, and skeletons, often in combination. He is often considered a surrealist, although he only briefly identified with the Surrealist movement. He was influenced by the works of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, but developed his own fantastical subjects and hyper-realistic styling, combining the detailed classical beauty of academic painting with the bizarre juxtapositions of surrealism. Throughout his long career, Delvaux explored "Nude and skeleton, the clothed and the unclothed, male and female, desire and horror, eroticism and death – Delvaux's major anxieties in fact, and the greater themes of his later work. Delvaux was born on 23 September 1897 in Antheit (now part of Wanze) in the Belgian province of Liège. His parents lived in Brussels, but his mother went to her own mother's home to have her first child. The birthplace house would later be destroyed by fire, in 1940. The father was Jean Delvaux, a prosperous barrister at the Court of Appeal Brussels. The mother was the musician Laure Jamotte, who became a strong, dominant presence in his life, directing, controlling, and repressing his childhood and adolescent desires. The young Delvaux studied Greek and Latin, and absorbed the fiction of Jules Verne and the poetry of Homer's Odyssey. His artwork was to be greatly influenced by these readings, starting with his earliest drawings showing mythological scenes. His music lessons were conducted in the school's museum room, where a human skeleton in a glass cabinet was always present. From 1910 to 1916, he studied Classics at the Atheneum of Saint-Gilles, where he was a middling or average student. Upon his graduation, his parents got him an office job with a shipping company in Brussels. It was soon evident that he had no skills or interests in business or law, and he was grudgingly allowed to study architecture at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts despite his ambition to become a painter. In 1916, he started at the Académie, initially learning the basics of architecture and perspective drawing. He was then disqualified due to his weakness in mathematics, and dropped out after his first year Delvaux was worried about his future career, and passed the time by copying postcards. His mother advised him to paint from nature, and in 1919 he produced his first watercolors, some scenic vistas. This artwork titled "Vivaldi, Autumn" 1993 in an original etching with hand coloring by noted German artist Jurgen Gorg, b.1951. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered E.A. III/X in pencil by the artist. The plate mark (image) size is 15.5 x 12.5 inches, framed size is 29 x 18 inches. Custom framed in a wooden silver frame, with light grey matting, silver color bevel and red/brown fillet. The artwork and matting are in excellent condition, the frame have some scratches and dents, it will be replaced by a new similar or better silver frame when sold before shipping. This will bring the over all condition to excellent. About the artist: Born in 1951 in Dernbach, West Germany, Jurgen Gorg has established himself as a master craftsman and consummate artist. His etchings and lithographs reflect his innate talent and imagination. He studied visual arts first, in Koblenz, Germany and later, at the Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Gorg began his professional career in 1977 as an artist and printmaker and by 1980, was awarded a special painting prize by the district of Rheinland-Pfalz. Philip Pearlstein is an American painter born in Pittsburgh, PA, and best known for Modernist Realism nudes. Cited by critics as the preeminent figure painter of the 1960s to 2000s, he led a revival in realist art. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus with paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums. In 1941, his junior year in high school, he received his first recognition when awarded first and third prizes in Scholastic Magazine’s 14th National High School Art Exhibition. Upon graduation from high school in 1942, he enrolled in the Carnegie Institute of Technology but the draft limited his attendance to one year. After discharge from the army in 1946, he returned to Carnegie Tech where he received his BFA in 1949. Upon graduation, he moved to New York City where he pursued work in graphic design and received a Master’s degree in art history from New York University in 1955. Pearlstein worked as a graphic designer for Life Magazine before becoming an instructor at the Pratt Institute, and then a professor at Brooklyn College; he has also served as a visiting artist at several prestigious institutions throughout the country. His work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions throughout the United States with paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums. Pearlstein served as a President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters from 2003-2006 and currently lives and works in New York. “It is what is painted between the outlines that makes the difference between merely competent painting and really meaningful art.” —Philip Pearlstein In spring of 1946 he becomes assistant to Robert Lepper, head of the Design Program at Carnegie Institute of Technology, at the firm of Altenhof and Bown, Architects, and designs catalogs for building products through 1949. Meanwhile he enrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology and studied with Robert Lepper, Balcomb Green, and Samuel Rosenberg. Meets Dorothy Cantor, George Klauber, and Andy Warhol (Warhola), fellow students at Carnegie Institute of Technology. Serves as art editor of the Carnegie Technical, the student publication of the Engineering School, through 1949 when he received his BFA and moved to New York to live with Andy Warhol. A few months later he worked with graphic designer Ladislav Sutnar in design and production of catalogs of plumbing fixtures and ventilators for the next eight years. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University where he studied with Karl Lehmann, Craig Smith and Jose Lopez-Rey. In 1954 Clement Greenberg selectd Pearlstein to be in “Emerging Talent” show at Kootz Gallery, New York. Torso is shown. In September of 1958 he received a Fulbright Grant for Painting in Italy and traveled to Rome, Florence, Venice, Amalfi Coast and Sicily. Back in New York his drawing group includes at various times during the following thirteen years: Ann Arnold, Rudolph Burkhardt, Charles Cajori, Gretna Campbell, Lois Dodd, Louis Finkelstein, Joe Fiore, Sideo and Nora Fromboluti, Mary Frank, Stephen Greene, Theophil Groell (Repke), Philip Guston, Yvonne Jacquette, Diana Kurtz, Alex Katz, Gabriel Laberman, Mercedes Matter, George McNeil, Sidney Tillim, Jack Tworkov and William White.
