A beautiful painting by William Stephen Coleman of a woman with two girls in a semi classical style by a Mediterranean pond. The woman is depicted resting on a terrace with her young daughter asleep on her lap, whilst another child catches goldfish in a bowl. This tour de force would have most likely been painted by Coleman as an exhibition piece.
William Stephen Coleman was a figurative painter who was born in Horsham in 1829. He was one of 12 children born to a physician named William Thomas Coleman and his wife Henrietta (née Dendy). Three of his siblings Rebecca Coleman (b1837), Helen Cordelia Angell (1847–1884) and George Coleman also became artists, inheriting their artistic talent from their mother’s side of the family. Coleman developed an interest in nature from an early age, producing drawings as a hobby. Despite his ability, he initially followed in his father’s footsteps and trained as a surgeon. However, this proved unsuccessful and by the age of 21 he had turned back to art, later gaining employment with the Dalziel Brothers, a firm of wood engravers who specialised in natural history illustrations.
Sometime during the late 1850’s he moved to London where he married his first wife Henrietta Augusta Boultbee in 1858. Around the same time, he began producing illustrations for books; the first of which was entitled ‘Common Objects of the Country’ and published in 1858. He subsequently published two of his own books ‘Our Woodlands. Heaths, and Hedges’ in 1859 and ‘British Butterflies’ in 1860. After the death of his wife in 1860, his sister Rebecca and brother George went to live with him in Garway Road, Paddington. Rebecca would often assist him with the wood blocks for his illustrations.
As well as working as an engraver, he also began producing classically influenced paintings featuring figures in landscapes. Initially these were executed in watercolours but later extended to oil paintings. He began exhibiting at the Dudley Gallery in 1865 and was one of the original committee members. He continued to exhibit there until 1879 and was a committee member up until 1881.
By 1869, he had also begun to work on pottery decoration and in 1871 was asked by Minton’s to establish an Art Pottery Studio at Kensington Gore. Whilst at Minton’s, he produced figure designs for their ceramic ware. His sister Rebecca also worked at Minton’s and they moved to Belle Vue in Chelsea to be closer to the studio. From 1881, he lived at 3 St John’s Wood Studios, Queens Terrace in Paddington and in 1888 moved to 43 Broadhurst Gardens in Hampstead. John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability.
Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools.

A superb Scottish landscape painting of Glen Falloch by Sidney Richard Percy. The work is typical of his oeuvre and includes seated figures, a fisherman, cattle and sheep. Glen Falloch is a valley in the Argyll and Bute area of Scotland. It lies between Crianlarich and Loch Lomand. A beautiful winter landscape scene of a village covered in snow at sunset. A mother and son carry firewood back to their nearby cottage whilst other figures continue on home past the lake. In the distance, a church spire is silhouetted against the warm colours of the disappearing sun.
Nils or Niels Hans Christiansen was a well-accomplished painter born in Esbjerg in the Jutland peninsula of southwest Denmark on 22 July, 1850. He specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land.
He first came to England in 1863 for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria. Although he worked mainly in Denmark and Norway, he spent some time in England where he is believed to have exhibited with many of the leading art galleries in London. In addition to exhibiting in England, Christiansen also exhibited in his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member.
He seems to have settled in England and on 10 September 1887 he married Alice Dickens at York Square, Stepney. Together the couple lived at 36 Dempsey Street, Mile End with their children. One of their sons, Albert Edward Christiansen (1887-1927) also became an artist. Christiansen’s success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901, he had become a British subject and had moved to 15 Queens Road in Plaistow, West Ham where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1922 at Plaistow, aged 71.
His paintings are always beautifully drawn and with the inclusion of figures give added interest to the viewer. A number of his works can be found in museums and art collections in England including Epping Forest...

A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

Exhibition Size Painting
A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones.
As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. William Mellor was a landscape painter who was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1851, the son of Joseph Mellor, an artist and Mary Mellor. Initially, he was employed as a loom turner in the weaving industry before becoming a professional artist. William Luker Snr was born in 1828 at Faringdon, Berkshire to William and Jane Luker (née Charlwood). His father was a plumber and glazier by trade and the family lived at London Street in Faringdon. Little is known about his early education and it is believed for the most part he was self -taught. However, given the quality of his work and the fact that his family were able to keep a servant, he may well have received some artistic tuition.
By the early 1850’s, he had begun earning a living as an artist by advertising in local directories, earning commissions from local landowners. He made his debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1851 and was a prolific exhibitor there for over 40 years. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1852 and also exhibited at the British Institution.
He married the artist Ada Augusta Margetts (1839-1930) on 27 October 1864. Their eldest son William Luker Jnr (1867-1951) also became a well-known artist. The couple soon moved to London where they lived at 22 Gloucester Terrace, Campden Hill from where they both exhibited. From 1867, they lived at 15 Sheffield Terrace in Kensington until 1874 when they moved for the final time to 22 Notting Hill Square, later renamed Campden Hill Square in 1893. He died at Campden Hill-square on 28 February, 1905.
Luker specialised in landscapes featuring animals such as sheep and cattle, horses and deer. He travelled around visiting areas such as Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Wales and the Highlands. However, he also made trips to Egypt and Libya producing a series of Oriental scenes in the early 1860’s. His works show a great attention to detail and his use of a lighter palette gives his subjects a luminous quality that instantly attracts the viewer.
