When a house has bones as good as those of this mid-century Beverly Hills residence, furniture choices can be slimmed down to just what the space calls for and not a piece more. Courtney Applebaum has adopted that very approach in the home’s lofty living room, overlooking a tranquil, palm-shaded garden.
Keeping the center of gravity low to play up all of the luxurious volume, Applebaum has flanked vintage Poul Kjærholm PK31 lounge chairs with a softly curved sofa by fellow Dane Illum Wikkelsø and a Jean Prouvé daybed. At center: a custom coffee table in a warm walnut finish. Add a single piece of art — a primitive mask that happens to be the designer’s favorite element in the space — and it’s a wrap.
