The Downton Effect: Lady Mary’s Diamond Tiara

Lovely as we think she is, Kate Middleton has been something of a disappointment in the tiara department. Apart from her wedding day, the Duchess of Cambridge has donned only one sparkly headpiece during her tenure as an HRH. (Perhaps a recent edict from the Queen will rectify this.)

Thankfully, we have Downton Abbey to feed our appetite for the regalia of British nobility. And while there are many reasons to love the soapy British juggernaut — now midway through its fourth season in America — we’ve always been particularly besotted with the show’s exquisite eye for period dress, which reached its apogee with Lady Mary Crawley’s wedding day tiara. The 45-carat Georgian diamond topper worn by actress Michelle Dockery was sourced through the renowned dealer Bentley and Skinner. And since visiting the storied halls of Downton, the jewels have made their way to 1stdibs.
