This week we’re featuring Destination by Design, our (virtual) attempt at a trip around the world. Fortunately, we have some amazing tour guides: five of our favorite aesthetes selected global destinations and then curated some awesomely gorgeous Pinboards in homage of their chosen locales. Today’s traveler is California-based interior designer Mark D. Sikes. Not only is his eponymous blog one of our daily reads, his residential projects are consistently refined, classic, and steeped in clever details. Sikes brought us to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, where beach style meets tailored classicism. See more from Sikes below, and visit Destination by Design: Punta Cana on Pinterest.
1. Why were you drawn to Punta Cana?
Some of my favorite homes are found in Punta Cana, including Oscar and Annette de la Renta’s home, and John Rosselli and Bunny Williams’ home. Both properties have been a source of inspiration for me, as they exemplify the relaxed yet sophisticated indoor-outdoor lifestyle that I so love!
2. What images and visuals do you most closely associate with the city?
Blue skies and water, green lawns, the shadows of palm trees, coral stones, blue and white porcelain, wicker-clad lanais, chinoiserie, baskets, Anglo-Indian antiques, orchids in trees, and slipcovers.
3. What are three words you’d use to describe Punta Cana?
Chic, glamorous, and stylish!
4. Please share your favorite image from the board, with a short explanation of why you like it.
For me, this photograph of the de la Renta’s home that pretty much defines the architecture, beauty and romance of Punta Cana. I love everything about this picture and the lifestyle, refinement, and beauty it represents.
