Goyard Trunks and Luggage

Time and secrecy have enhanced the allure of Goyard, one of the world’s oldest luxury leather goods and trunk makers. Originating in 1792 as the House of Martin with a focus on making trunks and other travel goods, the business served the packing needs of French travelers. It was renamed in 1853, after the business passed to François Goyard, who began as an apprentice in 1845.

The company’s renown grew under François’s son, Edmond, who took over in 1885. In branding Goyard, Edmond was inspired by his family connection to the Compagnons de Rivières (“Companions of the River”), an association of transporters whose members floated firewood to Paris on inland waterways. The Goyard Chevron, launched in 1892, features an understated pattern of Ys that were created with a series of dots, which represent the logs his ancestors shepherded down the river.

For trunks and other wares, Edmond applied the interlocking pattern to a waterproof cotton and linen weave. His innovations garnered awards, including gold medals at the World Exposition of Milan (1906) and the Franco-British Exposition of London (1908), and an honorary degree at the International Exhibition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art of Paris (1925), the show that brought the Art Deco style to worldwide attention. The trunks became highly desirable objects of luxury travel, and the brand developed its cachet.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a trunk-turned-writer’s-desk. Hugh Grosvenor, the 2nd Duke of Westminster, ordered a trunk for Coco Chanel. Chef Alain Ducasse ordered a custom Goyard trunk to carry his cutlery.

Monograms can tell us about the history and evolution of a brand, and at Goyard, in-house artisans still hand paint the marquage — the monograms, stripes and other motifs that personalize Goyard bags, case pieces and steamer trunks, which today can be used in any interior as nightstands, coffee tables or robust storage cabinets. But if you want to add a crown symbol to your trunk, you’ll have to provide proof of royal lineage.

Louis Vuitton Leather Cabin Trunk, circa 1930
By Louis Vuitton
Located in London, GB
A well proportioned natural leather covered Louis Vuitton cabin trunk that has built up an attractive patina with age. Has original leather handles & brass fittings and has its original interior in-tact (including the original tray); Circa 1930. One of the original handle supports is a newly made replacement of the original, that was beyond repair. Provenance: From the collection of Anouska Hempel, noted interior designer, hotelier and taste maker. Dimensions: 91 cm/35⅞ inches (length) x 52 cm/20½ inches (depth) x 34.5 cm/13⅝ inches (height). About Louis Vuitton From humble beginnings, Louis Vuitton laid the foundations for a luggage enterprise serving the upper echelons of 19th-century society. His son, Georges, expanded on his father’s work throughout the 20th century. Louis Vuitton was born on 4 August 1821 in Anchay, a rural village in Eastern France. His father, Xavier Vuitton, was a farmer, his mother, Coronne Gaillard, a milliner. In 1835, aged 13, Vuitton left Anchay on foot for his two-year journey to Paris. He found work as a layetier – a maker of wooden boxes and cases for transporting travelers’ possessions – and was selected as the personal layetier to Empress Eugénie de Montijo, a Spanish Countess and wife of Napoleon III. In 1854, at 4 Rue Neuve de Capucines, Paris, Vuitton launched his enterprise, gaining recognition among Parisian nobility. A second Parisian store opened at 1, Rue Scribe, after the 1871 Siege of Paris. Striped “Rayée” canvas and the first Vuitton Wardrobe Trunk arrived in the 1870s, expanding abroad to 289 Oxford Street, London, and introducing the Damier canvas in the 1880s. Louis Vuitton passed away in 1892, leaving the business to his son, Georges. He set about expanding the family firm even further, selling out at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. J.P. Morgan and family became valued clients, and Georges patented the iconic LV monogram design in 1896, paying homage to a medieval Franc box rosette motif from his personal collection. The early 1900s saw the Steamer Bag launch and new premises on the Champs Élysées. Georges was never one to shy away from a bespoke order; customers could, and regularly did, request whatever their heart desired. Legendary commissions included a “Malle Lit” explorer’s camp bed trunk...

Questions About Goyard Trunks and Luggage
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
In 1792, the House of Martin was a well-known trunk maker creating trunks and other leather goods for the French. The company was renamed in 1853 after Francois Goyard took over the business. Goyard is still in business and known for its artisanal craftsmanship and the scarcity of this luxe brand. Rather than mass-producing products like its competition, Goyard is happy to create trunks one at a time, and often with custom specifications. Find a collection of vintage and modern Goyard bags and trunks on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
Goyard is so expensive for a few reasons. First, the French fashion house uses costly materials, including its signature Goyardine canvas made of natural hemp, linen and cotton fibers. Also, artisans perform much of the crafting process by hand, making manufacturing expenses considerable. Finally, Goyard produces only a limited number of bags each year. Since demand often outweighs supply, Goyard is able to sell its pieces at aspirational price points. Explore a selection of Goyard bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
What makes Goyard so special is the heritage of the fashion house and the quality of the pieces it produces. Few brands have stood the test of time as resolvedly as the French House of Goyard, a family-owned maker of luxury handbags, totes and accessories in chic, timeless styles and a vibrant array of colors. The internationally renowned bags were born out of the maison’s original business of making leather goods and other luxury travel wares, which were once the favorite of the French aristocracy. Goyard trunks are highly sought-after antiques today. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Goyard pieces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Serving the packing needs of French travellers, Goyard began producing its luxury trunks in 1792 under the name House of Martin. No, Goyard does not have an online store. The French fashion house does provide distance ordering services through some of its boutiques, and you can learn more about them on the official Goyard website. Alternatively, you can shop for Goyard handbags and accessories on trusted online platforms like 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 15, 2024
The Goyard pattern doesn't have a name, but the French luxury fashion house calls the fabric that features it Goyardine. The son of the maison's founder, Edmond Goyard, created this proprietary fabric and its unique print in 1892. The pattern incorporates the Y found in the center of the Goyard surname and dotted chevrons meant to represent the logging industry, which employed the Goyard family prior to the founding of their fashion house in 1792. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Goyard bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
The exact reason why Goyard doesn't sell online has never been stated. However, many people speculate that the French luxury fashion house has refrained from entering the online market in order to control access to its pieces. In this way, Goyard is able to maintain its reputation for being an exclusive brand. Shop a variety of Goyard bags and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What Goyard bag is the most popular is largely a matter of personal opinion. Some of the French luxury brand's most notable styles include the Anjou, the Saint Louis, the Saigon Top Handle, the Aligre, the Petite Flot and the Minaudiere. Shop a collection of Goyard bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024
What is so special about Goyard bags comes down to their materials. Most Goyard bags feature Goyardine, a canvas made from hemp, linen and cotton. Durable and lightweight, it features a distinctive "Y" pattern created from three chevrons of different shades. A coating on the canvas makes it resistant to both staining and the effects of water, making Goyard bags capable of standing the test of time even with daily use. Find a collection of Goyard bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Goyard makes very popular and luxe backpacks. Since 1853, Goyard has been making luxury and quality trunks, establishing a solid reputation in the world of travel. It only makes sense that they’ve expanded their line to include backpacks—today’s effortless way to tote and travel. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic Goyard pieces from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
To spot a fake Goyard bag, examine the print closely. On authentic pieces, you'll see a crisp, well-defined print with easy-to-read letters and clear markings. Replicas rarely are able to perfectly emulate Goyard's signature motif. Shop a range of Goyard handbags from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.

    ChicjoySeptember 24, 2020

Goyard bags are made from coated canvas, leather trims, and fabric interiors. The exterior can be cleaned by wiping it down with a soft cloth dampened with gentle soap and water.

  • 1stDibs ExpertJuly 31, 2024
There are a couple of reasons why some shoppers may consider Goyard bags to be expensive.

First, the celebrated French fashion house works solely with sumptuous, costly materials like the proprietary water-resistant fabric Goyardine, which consists of fine natural fibers such as hemp, linen and cotton. All Goyard wallets, shoulder bags, totes and other goods are entirely handmade, a painstaking process that can take up to a few months per item. In addition, there is an exclusivity factor. Goyard produces only a limited number of bags each year, and demand for them is very high. This has a considerable effect on the price of these very durable and desirable accessories.

Find a range of Goyard bags for sale on 1stDibs.

Goyard bags are of outstanding quality, featuring durable coated canvas material and excellent workmanship.  Personalizations of Goyard bags are still hand-painted by Goyard artisans in the house’s ateliers.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To buy a Goyard bag in the US, visit high-end boutiques in big cities like New York, San Francisco and Beverly Hills. You can also shop for Goyard bags from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs. Originating in 1792 as the House of Martin with a focus on trunk-making, the luxury leather goods business served the packing needs of French travelers. It was renamed in 1853, after the business passed to François Goyard, who began as an apprentice in 1845.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Whether Goyard is easy to get varies. The French luxury fashion house produces only a limited number of pieces each year, and demand is often high. As a result, certain pieces may be in short supply at the brand's boutiques. In addition, Goyard does not have an online store or partner with third-party e-commerce retailers, which can add to the difficulty of making a purchase. You can, however, find Goyard pieces on trusted online platforms. Explore a diverse assortment of Goyard bags and accessories on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 14, 2024
Goyard is so hard to find because the supply is much smaller than the demand for the French luxury fashion house's iconic bags. Skilled artisans produce each piece by hand through a process that takes about four weeks, and the lengthy manufacturing process means that Goyard can only make a limited number of bags each year. In addition, Goyard makes its bags available for sale through an official online website and limits customers to four annual purchases, increasing demand and further reducing supply. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of Goyard bags.
  • Chicjoy
    ChicjoySeptember 24, 2020

Goyard bags remain immensely popular due in part to its reclusive brand and limited retail distribution. As well, the ease and capacity of the Goyard totes have made it a time-tested favorite amongst the jet set.

  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
No, you cannot buy a new Goyard bag online. There is no store component to Goyard’s website. If you’re interested in buying a new Goyard bag, the company advises shoppers to contact the brand’s team of sales ambassadors through its official website to learn about visiting a boutique or making a purchase without the need for face-to-face interaction.
