Goyard Tote Bags
Vintage Goyard handbags and purses are refined, simple and often branded with the iconic Goyardine interlocking chevron pattern. The house is famous for its luxurious totes, messenger bags, shoulder bags and other accessories, such as the lightweight and reversible Saint Louis tote. These internationally renowned bags were born out of the maison’s original business of making leather goods and other luxury travel wares — in fact, Goyard trunks are highly sought-after antiques today.
Founded in 1792 as the House of Martin, the company gained favor with the French aristocracy and transformed into an international brand once it passed into the hands of the Goyard family. Goyard is rather secretive and doesn’t frequently engage with the press or social media, and today the brand continues to specialize in producing premium trunks and leather goods.
When it comes to Goyard bags, while the Anjou and Artois totes are popular items, the Saint Louis is the brand’s best known offering. In addition to the PM (petite modèle) and XXL versions, the Saint Louis bag is also made in the widely cherished GM (grand modèle) size. The Junior size is believed to have been discontinued.
The Saint Louis tote, crafted from waterproofed cotton, linen and hemp canvas, is smart, tough and roomy. This sturdy, reversible carryall’s name comes from King Louis IX — a reportedly kind-hearted ruler of France during the 13th century who was also known as Saint Louis. The bag is an everyday status symbol for those in the know, who often opt to personalize theirs with monograms or motifs. (A particularly striking version of the Goyard Saint Louis features a flurry of hand-painted butterflies.)
In 1998, the maison was purchased by passionate Goyard bag and trunk collector Jean-Michel Signoles. With the help of his family, he re-established the brand as a purveyor of luxury bags that continue to garner recognition.

Although part of a modern look, tote bags have been roomy and versatile accessories since at least 1944, with the launch of L.L.Bean’s “ice bag.” The Maine retailer, then largely known for rugged field coats and hunting shoes, had introduced a big, durable canvas bag that was initially intended to carry firewood or ice. In those days, to keep produce and other foods cool in refrigerators, consumers had to regularly replace the blocks of ice that were doing all the work in their bulky appliances. There was no better bag to help haul big blocks of ice from the trunk of your car to your front door and, subsequently, to your kitchen.
Years later, during the 1960s, L.L.Bean’s Boat and Tote was introduced as an overhauled structured canvas version of the ice bag. Tested to lug up to 500 pounds, the Boat and Tote became a best seller. Also during the 1960s, American designer Bonnie Cashin created the Cashin Carry for Coach. Cashin was Coach’s first lead designer, and she liked leather, large pockets and earth tones. Her modern interpretation of the tote bag introduced a touch of elegance to this increasingly ubiquitous accessory.
In the subsequent decades, more brands debuted their own iterations of the tote bag, from Tory Burch’s Perry leather tote bag to Goyard’s luxurious Saint Louis.
Pay tribute to this long and interesting history of a well-loved accessory by browsing the vintage and designer tote bags on 1stDibs.
