An exceptionally unique set of wrought iron chairs stamped 'BRETEAU' with rope corded seats, circa 1955 France.
A similar chair sold in 2009 at Christie's, sold as 'Jean Luc Breteau'. This chair was also stamped and hand crafted in the same fashion, only difference with a leather wrapped seat. It sold for well over the estimate given by Christie's, with Buyers Premium and accounting for inflation the single chair cost around $9,000 to the lucky winning bidder. This set, even more special as a rare set of four, allowing the opportunity to use around a cafe or center table.
Three of the four chairs are stamped on the upper circular backrest, as can be seen in the photos. Each chair exhibits unique characteristics throughout consistent with hand-crafted and hand-hammered items. Exceptionally unique, and exquisitely refined.
These unique Breteau iron chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Signed and dated (1981) by the artist underneath the seat. Carved from Maple and Black Walnut, this gorgeous piece of art is something unique, fun and whimsical, and ideal for art and design collectors and investors.
This incredible chair, which in of itself is a sculpture of collectible fine art, was designed as a figural man's head where the backrest is comprised of the hair and eyes along with a sculpted nose, teeth and mustache. The tongue makes the seat and below that for the legs of the chair is the beard and chin. Other Alan Siegel chairs were present in the exhibition such as the 'Smiling Bandit' chair and 'Laughing Bandit' chair which were also carved from Maple and Black Walnut.
Ideal for Modern and Post-Modern homes, also consider for Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Transitional and Mixed-styled rooms. First, and most noticeably, is the size. They are huge, humungous, monumental, enormous... I mean, they are incredibly large. You can easily fit two people and a dog in a single chair and have room to cuddle, snuggle, hang-out, watch a movie, have drinks in an intimate setting, or even fall asleep comfortably cradled. It's not just how wide they are but also the depth also provides a dramatic increase in overall 'lounging' footprint of the chairs. These chairs are so large, they shouldn't even be called chairs, they are somewhere between a loveseat and a daybed - perhaps they should be called lovebeds instead?
The second thing that we absolutely love about these chairs is its design history. The Jennifer chair is one of Michael's earliest designs. This monumentally sized modular 'Camaleonda' sectional living room set (fourteen pieces in total) by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, each section signed with labels as can be seen in the photos. Included in the set are eight (8) full-sized seat sections, each is quite large and spacious which adds to the incredible comfort. And six (6) full-sized seat backs leaving two of the seat sections to be used as ottomans or free-floating seat elements to open the sectional to either side. This set has been previously professionally reupholstered with only light use and in very good condition.
Designed by Mario Bellini in 1970 for C&B Italia, later produced after 1973 by B&B Italia after Piero Busnelli bought out Cassina and changed the name to B&B. This set consists of six sections labelled with C&B labels and two sections with B&B labels, meaning that most of this set was produced between 1970 and 1973 - the original production years of the Camaleonda, and making this set ideal for collectors and investors of art and design.

This set of important Pierre Patout open arm chairs were from the first class dining room on board of the S.S. Île de France, circa 1927. With excellent provenance, this exact set was previously sold at Christie's New York on June 1, 2006 during their Ocean Liner Furnishings and Art auction as Lot 286. As seen in the last photo, they had a hammer price of $12,000 plus buyers premium (usually from 20 to 30% of hammer price) and had an estimate of up to $25,000. Keep in mind that this is in 2006 and the inflation rate since then has been almost 30% in total. One of the chairs still retains the Christie's label as can be seen in the last photo.
These Pierre Patout french art deco dining chairs feature an open arm design, flared legs, scalloped Mahogany sections which make up the seat base and seat back. Covered in soft and sumptuous velvet which has a light orange-brown color. Such incredible craftsmanship and quality materials that you just don't find in todays products.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER:
Pierre Patout (1879-1965), was a close friend and associate of Jacques-Emile Ruhlman, creating designs for the 1925 Exposition of Decorative Arts. Patout designed the main gateway of the Exposition on the Place de la Concorde, and also The Hôtel du Riche Collectionneur, one of the most popular attractions at the Exposition. Inside it displayed new furniture designs of Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, as well as Art Deco fabrics, carpets, and a painting by Jean Dupas.
His success at the Exposition led to commissions for transatlantic ocean liners including the Ile de France, L'Atlantique, and, the most famous of all the SS Normandie. The highlight of the Normandie interior was the dining room, illuminated with rows of lighted columns of Lalique crystal.

An intriguing set of restored armchairs, which are confirmed to be from the 1940s and earlier. The question is - how much earlier? Crafted in the Regency style, this set of Ebonized and Gilt frames chairs feature gold colored leather seats and a charismatic silhouette with a lot of interesting artistic details.

The chairs are signed with Mid-Century era upholstery tags and a business card for an antiques restorer. The business card is of a 1940s style and the address used is the style of address used between 1943 and 1963 which is before ZIP codes were used but after the implementation of the 2 digit Postal Code system.
What is currently unknown is whether Fred H. Mehrhoff reproduced these chairs in that time or if he had restored them. Generally speaking, antique restorers did much more restoring than they did reproducing. Reproductions were mostly private commissions from local clientele.
We found a 1935 newspaper directory with Fred H. Mehrhoff listed as a cabinetmaker in Ohio, which further supports his career as an antiques restoration specialist. Again, the question is whether he crafted these chairs in the 1940s or possibly 1950s, or if he restored them and they are much older - perhaps of the Regency period (early 1800s).
If he restored these in the 1940s, which we are inclined to believe, they are likely an important set and from an important maker or design house, such as Maison Jansen. These have the aesthetic style and taste of Maison Jansen, and we definitely would not be surprised to learn these were used in a Jansen interior project at some point in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
These Maison Jansen attributed armchairs would work great in a French Neoclassical, Classical, Art Deco, or Hollywood Regency home. Also consider mixing it up in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern, Danish Modern or Zen / Minimalist room as a splash of juxtaposition.
