Beautiful hand woven tapestry by renowned Israeli sculptor Menashe Kadishman. Super quality, and visually stunning. It measures about 32.5 X 27.5 inches It is signed with initials. This is similar to an Aubusson style flat weave hand woven wool tapestry. This is most probably from the George Goldstein Atelier in Jerusalem. (Originally known as Nazareth Tapestries) They produced genuine handmade Gobelin tapestries in Israel). This does not bear a label. In 1964 the first French style weaving studio was inaugurated in Israel, in the new city of Nazareth Ilit. With the encouragement of master Jean Lurcat, woven upon several contemporary masters’ original sketches, such as Jean Lurcat, Hans Hartung, Adolph Gottlieb, Karel Appel, Yaacov Agam, Mordecai Ardon, Reuven Rubin, Danny Caravan, and more. Some of these tapestries encountered their moments of glory during the international exhibitions, such as in the Museum of Modern Art (NY), “Expo Montreal” (Canada), Biennale of Lausanne (Switzerland), and others. In 1967, after the Six-Day War, Nazareth’s workshop closed its doors and returned to Jerusalem where he opened a new studio with a young team made up of eighteen artisans, dedicating their work more specifically towards Israeli artists. The tapestries are woven upon the original sketches of Yohanan Simon, Naftali Bezem. They can be seen hanging on the wall of the Israeli President’s residence, the Yeshiva University of New York, the University of Haifa, New York Bank Discount, as 60-square meter tapestries for the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, and in ceremonial art. Tapestries for Parochet and Torah mantles are seen in Washington, Bet-El Springfield, Babson College, Boston, Bet-El Univ. Andover, Bet-El Highland Park and the Strasbourg Great Synagogue in France. Jacob Otto Pins (17 January 1917 – 4 December 2005) was a German-born Israeli woodcut artist and art collector, particularly of Japanese prints and paintings. Jacob Pins was born in Höxter, Germany, the son of Dr Leo Pins, a veterinarian, and his wife Ida Lipper. He immigrated to Palestine in 1936 to study art. His father tried to discourage him from becoming an artist for financial reasons. Pins' younger brother, Rudolph, (1920-2016) moved to the United States in 1934. His father was sent to Buchenwald. In July 1944, both parents died in the Riga ghetto. Pins first lived on a kibbutz, which was disbanded in 1941. He moved to Jerusalem and studied woodcut and linocut under woodcut master and painter Jacob Steinhardt, also a German immigrant, at his small private school. He lived in poverty in a tiny room, subsisting on a meagre diet. He continued his studies at the new Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Pins was married to Elsa, the subject of a number of his prints. They had no children. Pins bought his first Oriental print in 1945, and acquired a house on Ethiopia Street, opposite the Ethiopian church, where he lived for the rest of his life. He continued collecting until his death and was one of Israel's foremost art collectors. His book on Japanese Pillar Prints, Hashira-e is the definitive work on the subject. Pins died in Jerusalem in December 2005. Pins' artwork was heavily influenced by German expressionism and traditional Japanese wood block printing. From 1956 to 1977, he taught at Israel's leading art schools, most notably Bezalel, where he later became a professor. He was known as a demanding teacher, emphasizing strong technical skills and discipline. JJ had a masters (MFA) from Prat and studied at Hunter college for many years. He was a master jeweler and goldsmith for 50 years, a musician and a photographer. He made a living working with photography, jewelry, bronze sculpture and antique restoration. An artwork in denim fabric by a French Post War & Contemporary artist living in New York City, Jean de la Verrière, An untrained, art brut, 'outsider' artist, now 85. He sold some of his denim patriotic flag works through OK Harris gallery in Soho in the 1980s, one went directly to Ralph Lauren, according to the artist. He is also known for sculpture. particularly his working model, fully functional guillotine sculptures. Artist says he was influenced by Pop Art particularly Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns works. He was in the New York art world along with his artist friends Bernar Venet, Arman and Claude Gillie. He fabricated and cast jewelry for some of his friends. This has a Sterling Ruby feel to it but was done a generation earlier. Smadar Livne, an Israeli born artist, is currently living and creating in Owings Mills, Maryland. An award winning artist, she is recognized as one of today’s leading Judaica artists. Educated at Haifa University, Livne has degrees in art, literature, and architecture. She has continued her education of philosophy through Baltimore Hebrew University. Portraying scenes from her life and learning is what gives her work an edge. Livne’s works are vibrant and exciting, and express the joy that Livne sees in life. Artist: Schwebel, Ivan (Israeli 1932 - 2011) Ivan Schwebel, Painter. Was born 1932, U.S.A. and immigrated to Israel 1963 after living in Spain, France and Greece. Studies: 1953-55 with Kimura Kyoen whilst serving with the U.S.Army in Japan; 1955-61 Institute of Fine Arts, with Philip Guston; New York University. Larry Abramson, who is very much in the mainstream of Israeli art, curated an exhibition of Schwebel’s work at the Jerusalem Print Workshop in the early 1980s; in the accompanying text, he described him as “an artist from the New York School ship-wrecked on a hill near Jerusalem.” IN SCHWEBEL’S BEST WORK, THE paint speaks for itself: the pools and explosions of rich color, achieved with pigment that he would grind and mix himself, the luminous figures emerging out of dark shadows, the quirky, dramatic compositions. Schwebel was erudite, with a passion for the bible and Jewish and Israeli history. He delved into all of it for his subject matter, bringing together characters and narratives regardless of time, and setting them in modern- day Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, the Judean hills, or New York City. He liked to play with ideas, and thoroughly mixed his visual metaphors. He showed David and Bat-Sheva next to a Nazi deportation train, and Job despairing over his relationship with the Palestinians. He based his characters on photographs of himself, friends and family, or movie stars. On his website, he describes a series of paintings about anti-Semitism in which the Holocaust is merged with the Spanish Inquisition: “Abarbanel who tried to negotiate with Ferdinand and Isabella is reincarnated in Rumkowski – the German appointed Head of the Lodz Ghetto. The bridge connecting two parts of the Ghetto is spanned over a present-day Tel Aviv cityscape. This was from a portfolio that included Ivan Schwebel, Michael Gross, Liliane Klapisch and Moshe Kupferman, five of Israel's leading contemporary artists who were each approached in May 1977 with a request to contribute a hand-printed screenprint for a portfolio to be titled "Jerusalem". The sole term of reference was the name "Jerusalem", with no qualifications at all. The five artists then spent time working completely independently and individually on the project at the Jerusalem Print Workshop. Each screenprint was hand-signed by their respective artist and numbered from the edition of 200, hand-printed on BFK Rives paper Published by Whartman and Sacks Art Publications His “Tel Aviv” series, in contrast, is fun: “Chen Cinema” shows a couple of actors who seem to have stepped out of an old romantic movie to cuddle in the shabby street outside the cinema. Jacob Otto Pins (17 January 1917 – 4 December 2005) was a German-born Israeli woodcut artist and art collector, particularly of Japanese prints and paintings. Jacob Pins was born in Höxter, Germany, the son of Dr Leo Pins, a veterinarian, and his wife Ida Lipper. He immigrated to Palestine in 1936 to study art. His father tried to discourage him from becoming an artist for financial reasons. Pins' younger brother, Rudolph, (1920-2016) moved to the United States in 1934. His father was sent to Buchenwald. In July 1944, both parents died in the Riga ghetto. Pins first lived on a kibbutz, which was disbanded in 1941. He moved to Jerusalem and studied woodcut and linocut under woodcut master and painter Jacob Steinhardt, also a German immigrant, at his small private school. He lived in poverty in a tiny room, subsisting on a meagre diet. He continued his studies at the new Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Pins was married to Elsa, the subject of a number of his prints. They had no children. Pins bought his first Oriental print in 1945, and acquired a house on Ethiopia Street, opposite the Ethiopian church, where he lived for the rest of his life. He continued collecting until his death and was one of Israel's foremost art collectors. His book on Japanese Pillar Prints, Hashira-e is the definitive work on the subject. Pins died in Jerusalem in December 2005. Pins' artwork was heavily influenced by German expressionism and traditional Japanese wood block printing. From 1956 to 1977, he taught at Israel's leading art schools, most notably Bezalel, where he later became a professor. Tom Carapic (born 1939), full name Tomislav Sava Čarapić, is an artist who specialises in found object artwork. He also does street art. A prominent Outsider Artist he was a featured artist in the American Visionary Art Museum's End is Near Exhibit. His work was also featured in the exhibition catalog. His work has been sold at Slotin Folk Art. Carapic was born in Velisevac, Serbia (then Kingdom of Yugoslavia). He was educated at a military school in Herzegovina in the 1950s, and served as a sergeant in the Yugoslav People's Army. Afterwards he was denied a college education, possibly because he was not a member of the Communist Party, illegally crossed into Italy in 1961, and, from there, emigrated to the United States. In 1965, he began attending classes at the New York Art Students League, but dropped out soon afterwards, eventually attending the Wilfred Academy of Beauty Culture. He was unable, however, to find steady beauty parlor employment, and worked in menial labor while attending classes in Spanish Education at Manhattan Community College. Due to a problem with accreditation, he was forced to switch to classes in the field of studio art. There he experienced hallucinatory visions that explained his repeated failures to obtain a degree. American painter and author Alex Beard is best known for his elaborate wildlife compositions created in his signature style of gesturalpainting, which he has coined “Abstract Naturalism.” Raised in a family that fostered philanthropy, creativity and exploration, Alex has traveled extensively around the world. The diverse cultures, colors, and climates of Africa, India, China, the Americas, and Australia have profoundly influenced both his professional and artistic practice. While earning his BA from Tufts University, he studied painting and drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In his early twenties Alex moved to New Orleans to continue his formal training at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. Fueled by curiosity about the cultures and wildlife he had been exposed to in his early years, Alex has spent much of his life traveling to the some of the world’s most remote wildlife outposts - paintbrush in hand. I had a show that travelled Germany, about 15 different museums. Sunday we go to Denmark; I'm showing the early assemblage I did in 1961 which was the signal for conceptual art. I'm just two days there, then I'm going to Venice to meet Julian Schnabel - Count Volpe's given us a place to paint in Giudecca. Then I'm going to Documenta in Germany to hang another show, then I go back to LA on the 21st and start a film on the 23rd." Notes/Literature: Dr. Pentti Kouri(1949-2009) was a Finnish economist and venture capitalist with partner George Soros. He built his prestigious art collection with the goal of opening a private art foundation focused on his interests in Minimalism, Arte Povera, Conceptual and Text-based art. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Dia Art Foundation, and on the boards of Tate, London and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. In addition, a portion of his collection forms the core of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland Hopper made his film debut alongside James Dean in 1955's Rebel Without a Cause. Both lost souls from dysfunctional households, they gravitated to each other, smoked dope and took joy rides. When Dean died, Hopper saw himself as the natural inheritor of his rebellious mantle and, revelling in his nickname of "Dennis the Menace", gave it to Hollywood with both barrels; so they dropped him. Dennis didn't make another Hollywood movie for seven years. Frustrated by the deliberate stifling of his film career, Dennis turned to art and photography for creative stimulus, beginning with abstract subjects such as landscapes. His cutting-edge conceptual art became established round the world, with exhibitions in major cities. At home in the dining room stood one particularly interesting work, a white plastic box, eight feet long, that had an aluminium shaft sticking out of it, and two very large balls. It was called The Perpetual Erection Machine. Before Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst, there was Dennis. In 1961, Hopper took part in an international photography competition in Australia with a contribution of five abstract photos, which he called Pieces. He won first place. Soon after, Hopper married Hayward, daughter of the film producer Leland Hayward, whose credits include The Sound of Music and South Pacific. The wedding party of Hopper and Hayward was held in August at the apartment of actress Jane Fonda, a childhood friend of Hayward, who introduced Hopper to her younger brother Peter Fonda. Their daughter Marin was born in 1961, and they moved to Bel Air, California. Soon afterward the famous Bel Air fire destroyed their home, including approximately three-hundred Abstract Expressionist works and hundreds of pages of poetry that Hopper had begun in the mid-1950s. Moi Ver (Moshe Raviv) was born in 1904 in Vilnius, Lithuania as Moshe Vorobeichic. Moshe Vorobeichic received his initial artistic training in the early 1920s in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he studied painting, architecture, and photography. Having become an important figure in the Yiddish avant-garde culture, he exhibited his first works. From October 1927, he studied at the Bauhaus school in Dessau (Germany), with photographer-visual artist Laszlo Moholy Nagy and painters Josef Albers, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Hinnerk Scheper. In his book Moi Ver: Paris, he produced avant-garde photomontages. Originally published in 1931 by Editions Jeanne Walter with an introduction by futurist Fernand Leger. In 1932 Raviv was sent by the weekly La Vie Parisienne to British Mandate Palestine as photo reporter. Raviv illustrated many books. Raviv was a founder of the Artists' Colony in Safed. At the height of 20th Century modernism and one of the followers of Laszlo Moholy Nagy and his concept of New Vision, Moin Ver was one of the rising stars in European photography. Born in Lebedeva, in Belarus, he wandered through Europe until he immigrated to Palestine in 1934. His well known yet partly forgotten three photographic projects in 1931, The Ghetto Lane in Wilna, Paris: 80 Photographies de Moi Ver and Ci-Contre – 110 Photos de Moi Ver (that was not published at the time), have remained milestones in the art of the 1930s as he created and imposed a new visionary style in photography.
