About the Item
This is a mixed media monoprint titled Homage a Sam (I first thought it was for Sam Gilliam but the artist told me it was for Sam Francis. He has done a number of these Homages as I have found a New York Times article referencing a "cast paper folded into an airplane shape by Richard Royce serves as an homage to the late sculptor Alexander Calder".Richard Royce, born New York, 1941.
After getting his BA and MA in fine art at the University of Wisconsin where he studied under Alfred Sessler and Warrington Colescott, Richard went to France to study with Stanley William Hayter, director of the famed Atelier 17. On returning to the US He taught at UCLA and opened a studio, Atelier Royce, where he produced etchings, monotype, cast paper, paintings and sculptural commissions of his own work while at the same time helping other artists including Roy Lichtenstein (he worked on Roy Lichtenstein’s first woodcut for Gemini GEL publishers), Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Francoise Gilot and Jim Rosenquist to realize works in various media.

Richard Royce
Richard Royce was born in New York on August 18, 1941. After getting his BA and MA in fine arts at the University of Wisconsin, Richard went to France to study with Stanley W. Hayter, the father of modern printmaking. On returning to the US he opened a studio where he produced etchings, cast paper, paintings and sculpture commissions of his work while at the same time helping other artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Françoise Gilot and James Rosenquist to realize works in various media. His works are at Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, Historical Society of Wisconsin, Portland Art Museum, Oregon Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, International Paper Corporation, Isla Center at the University of Guam, Byer Museum of the Arts, Musée du Petit Format and Yasuda Life Insurance Company. For approximately 40 years he created prints, cast papers and sculptures. Richard Royce lives in Oregon. He is mostly active as a classical and flamenco guitar artist now.
