Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand

A Good Quality And Unusually Small Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray, Of Diminutive Proportion, Having Elegant Shaped Sides With Pierced Carrying Handles And Well Figured Top, Housed On Later Square Chamfered Leg Mahogany Stand.
During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards.
Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times.
Therefore it is now incredibly common to find 18th and 19th century trays of varying shape, size and design utilised as coffee tables. As with all the others that we have seen this particular tray has been fitted onto a low, practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. An exceptional quality mid-19th century, William IV Period, rosewood writing table having blind tooled leather inset to crossbanded top, over two drawers with original turned wooden knobs opposed by two false drawers, to extremely elegant shallow frieze, raised on reverse tapered, faceted, end supports with elegant carved scrolling feet and original recessed brass castors.
Dating to the William IV period, which of course has a most distinctive style of its own sitting, despite not lasting very long between the late regency and victorian periods of english furniture making, this writing table has a lot of stand out features.
Firstly it is a great size. A little bigger than many, indeed big enough to use as a day to day desk for working at, whilst not being overpoweringly large like many earlier georgian writing tables which one may find.
It is also of exceptional quality. Clearly constructed in a top workshop it is constructed using high end, decorative rosewood veneers on the outside and a lot of mahogany as secondary timbers on the inside which is a great sign of quality. The entire table oozes class and sophistication in fact from top to bottom.

Pembroke tables became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the middle of the 18th century, owing largely to their versatility and their plethora of different functions. In fact George Hepplewhite himself actually described Pembroke tables as "the most useful of tables" and many references can be found to them in the literature of the time. People such as Jane Austen even described them being used for dining at, or for writing at, whilst there is even reference to them being used in other places around the house such as for ladies to sit and and carry out their embroidery.
One thing that is certain is that the fact they are incredibly versatile even in todays world and can be used for many, many different purposes. The option of being able to use the two flaps to create significant variations in the size of the table top surface is certainly a popular and useful feature.
