Mahogany Kidney Shaped 19th Century Writing Table

About the Item

A quite exceptional quality late 19th century mahogany kidney shaped writing table, having gilt tooled decoration to leather inset top, over one drawer to frieze, with superb marquetry inlaid decoration, raised on elegant square tapered legs with original brass castors. Makers/Retailers Stamp To Top Of Drawer - "Maple & Co." There is a stamp to the drawer of this beautiful little table to show that it was once a part of the inventory of the exceptional London firm Maple & Co, so its hardly surprising that it is such good quality if they were willing to offer it for sale. Maple & Co were one of the most well known furniture makers and retailers in both the United Kingdom and the Rest Of The World at the end of the 19th Century and they offered only the best of the best. As one would expect it is quite exceptional quality and boasts real elegance in both its form and design. The kidney shaped design is a popular one, both for its function and elegance. The timbers used, both primary and secondary are all of very high grade and this means that the table is still as fit for purpose as the day it was made. One of the greatest features of this little writing table is that one doesn't have to use it as a desk. It is small enough to be use as an occasional table, lamp table, side table or even bedside table should one wish. Of course it would also make a fabulous little writing desk for somebody who is only required to occasionally be perched at their desk and perhaps only has a small space to work from. As with all items which we offer for sale this writing table has been inspected by our highly skilled tradtional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. This has ensured it is ready to be placed immediately into use within the home or office. Circa 1890. Measures: Height 29.75in. Width 39in. Depth 23in. An exceptional quality mid-19th century, William IV Period, rosewood writing table having blind tooled leather inset to crossbanded top, over two drawers with original turned wooden knobs opposed by two false drawers, to extremely elegant shallow frieze, raised on reverse tapered, faceted, end supports with elegant carved scrolling feet and original recessed brass castors. Dating to the William IV period, which of course has a most distinctive style of its own sitting, despite not lasting very long between the late regency and victorian periods of english furniture making, this writing table has a lot of stand out features. Firstly it is a great size. A little bigger than many, indeed big enough to use as a day to day desk for working at, whilst not being overpoweringly large like many earlier georgian writing tables which one may find. It is also of exceptional quality. Clearly constructed in a top workshop it is constructed using high end, decorative rosewood veneers on the outside and a lot of mahogany as secondary timbers on the inside which is a great sign of quality. The entire table oozes class and sophistication in fact from top to bottom. The original turned wooden knobs are a nice feature, as is the high support...
