About the Item

Karl Lagerfeld: Chanel's Russian Connection. Paperback Book by Karl Lagerfeld. Russian Connection is Karl Lagerfeld exploration of all things Russian. The book presents photos by Lagerfeld centred around Paris-Moscou, his 2008/9 Métiers dArts collection for Chanel, showcasing the fastidious workmanship of the Parisian ateliers that provide couture houses with decorative specialities such as artificial flowers, embroidery, feathers, costume jewellery, shoes and millinery. If Paris-Moscou indulges Lagerfelds fascination for Russia through fashion, then Russian Connection is that fascination embodied in book form. His vision is panoptic from Imperial Russia to Constructivism, from Catherine the Great to Fabergé, from Russian folklore to Coco Chanels own passion for Russia including the Ballets Russes, Byzantine jewellery and her affair with the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. The book combines Lagerfelds photographs from the accessoirisation and preparation for Paris-Moscou in Coco Chanels apartment in the rue Cambon, with film stills from Coco 1913 Chanel 1923, a silent black-and-white film portraying Coco Chanels flirtation with Russian-Parisian émigré society in the 1910s and 1920s. Lagerfeld himself was responsible for the original concept and art direction of the film, which features a cast of his friends. Coco 1913 Chanel 1923 opened the Paris-Moscou show at the Thé'tre le Ranelagh on 3 December 2008 in Paris, and is released for the first time to the public on a DVD included in Russian Connection. About the author (2009) Karl-Otto Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg, Germany on September 10, 1935. In 1954, he entered a fashion competition called the International Wool Secretariat and won the coat category. He was hired at the couture house of Pierre Balmain, where he stayed for three years until he left for Jean Patou, where he stayed for five years. He then did freelance design work for Krizia, Ballantyne, Charles Jourdan, and Chloé, where he stayed for over 10 years before leaving in 1982. He was the creative director of Chanel since 1983 and Fendi since 1965. He started his own brand in 1984, the Lagerfeld line. In 2015, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards. He was also a photographer and wrote books including The Karl Lagerfeld Diet and The World According to Karl. He died on February 19, 2019.

Cartier and America by Martin Chapman Hardcover Table Book 2009. 176 pp. 1st Edition Published in 2009. Dimensions: 11" x 10" x 1". As opulent as the treasures it celebrates, this lavish volume presents Cartier's timeless designs worn by some of the twentieth century's most legendary figures. It's been one hundred years since the House of Cartier opened its doors on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Since then the luxury jeweler has been creating exquisite brooches, bracelets, tiaras, timepieces, and other items including scent bottles, so-called mystery clocks, and handbags many of them specially commissioned by their illustrious patrons. Readers will see up close Gloria Swanson's bracelets from Sunset Boulevard, Douglas Fairbanks s elegant watch, the Duchess of Windsor s panther brooch, and Grace Kelly s 10.47-carat diamond engagement ring, as well as items owned by Marion Davies, Vivien Leigh, Barbara Hutton, and Elizabeth Taylor. Author Martin Chapman offers an in-depth exploration of how Cartier conquered America, from its European birth in 1847 to its arrival on the other side of the Atlantic, and from its whimsical Art Deco creations to the red carpet prominence that linked the name Cartier with fame, wealth, and exclusivity. In addition to stunning color images of each object, the book features photographs of stars and heiresses wearing their Cartier jewelry. A beautiful volume for fashion aficionados, this trove of jewelry is a tribute to Cartier s...
