Chinese Export Porcelain Plate with Judgement of Paris Scene Circa 1750
Located in Katonah, NY
An 18th-century Chinese export porcelain plate showing the Judgment of Paris. The delicately painted figures derive from a painting by Jean Paul Rubens. Made during the Qianlong Reign, circa 1750, the plate shows the goddesses Venus, Minerva, and Juno on one side and Paris on the other side. Charged by Jupiter to pick the most beautiful of the three, Paris selects Venus and awards her the golden apple. The scene shows Rubens' version of idealized feminine beauty. The rim of the plate is decorated with a rose-red flower band. Dimensions: 9 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $900 Background This dish was made exclusively for the European market based on the well-known Greek story from Homer, in which Paris, the son of the King of Troy, had to choose between several Goddesses to decide which one of them was the most beautiful. Around the exterior two elongated scenes are featured, one with boys playing games in a courtyard with the other featuring seated scholars in full dress both with raised enamel decoration. The central scene bordered by further stylised shippo-tsunagi type decoration with a greek key rim border. The bowl signed to the base Kinkozan dating to the Meiji Period (1868-1912) circa 1900. Shippo-Tsunagi (linked-cash) or seven treasures, is a traditional Japanese geometric pattern that combines four ellipses in a circle. These ellipses repeat outward to then create more circles, symbolising eternal peace and happiness. Kinkozan the Kinkozan family have been associated with pottery dating back to 1645. They went on to become the largest producer of Satsuma ware by one individual company, from the end of the 19th century until 1927 after which the factory closed. Pair of Japanese Gold Blue Porcelain Scroll Weights
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Pair of Japanese porcelain scroll weights (fuchin), extremely intricately gilded and hand painted on a beautiful square-shaped body in "chibu" technique in dark blue. First developed in the early years of the 19th century, the “chibu” technique tasks the artist with painstakingly creating patterns with minute raised pigmented drops of equal size placed at precise intervals to generate a highly textured and mesmerizing field of raised dots that are most frequently done in a bluish-green hue as in the piece, but also in white and gold. This pair is from the Kutani region of Japan and each piece bears the mark of Kutani on the reverse side. Traditional Japanese rooms are often decorated with scrolls. A “fuchin” or scroll weight is a pair of tasseled weights made of porcelain or stone that is hung on the scroll's bottom end roller to straighten the scroll and steady it in the breeze. Fuchin also accentuates the beauty of the scroll. Fuchins are used as curtain tie-backs and look stunning hanging on the knobs, keys and locks of armoires and cabinets...
