About the Item

An antique Japanese, probably Goto school, enamel over copper charger plate. The exterior of the plate is adorned with a polychrome image of ducks flying over a pond with blossoming flowers and plants on a turquoise ground made in the Cloisonne technique. The border features traditional foliage, floral, and scrollwork motifs. The backside is decorated with a swirl ornament, and an image of a flower made in the Cloisonne technique. Unmarked. Circa: 1880 Shōzaburō Gotō was a skilled Japanese artisan who began his work in the Nagoya area before relocating to the international trading hub of Yokohama around 1872–1874. Known for producing high-quality cloisonné enamel pieces, he gained recognition by winning 4th prize at the 1877 First Japan Domestic Exhibition in Tokyo. His reputation grew, securing 1st prize at the 1881 Second Japan Domestic Exhibition and earning a medal at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Today, examples of his exquisite craftsmanship can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. OVERALL GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION. SIGNS OF WEAR AND AGE. REFER TO PHOTOS.
